This layout is tripping me up- should the range be more centered?

Id like glass cabinets on either side of the range hood (36’)

The range should be farther from the fridge because that’s where you need counter space, inside of your work triangle. And… you have plenty of room for wall ovens. And the island should be narrower and longer.

I would not want that arrangement with either the sink or the fridge. However, I can't tell from the diagram which is which. Scooch the whole thing over, and split that ultra-long base cabinet into 2.

I'm kind of surprised at the direction of this thread. I didn't open it before because I don't know anything much about the induction ranges, then thought I should learn about them. Joshct, I agree with the advice to get a countertop model and try using it awhile. Realize that it's not going to have the speed and power of a built in, but it will have the responsiveness. Get used to it and learn what you do and don't like about cooking on induction so that you can make the right choice of range when the time comes. And maybe by then there will be a model of range, or cooktop/oven combo, that suits you. Maybe I missed it reading through, but I don't think anyone has completely addressed the noise issue. There are two kinds of noise with induction: the fan, which I think is for keeping the electronics cool, and pots whining. The pots whining is really a well known thing, and most manufacturers will mention it in their manuals. It's caused by the different layers in clad pans having fits. Cast iron is a great, even conductor, and solid cast iron doesn't whine. Neither does my enamelled steel tea kettle. I haven't seen any solid, cast stainless steel pans, however. There are solid stainless with aluminum or copper bottoms (Farber and Revere) to make for even conduction, which don't work on induction. All the rest seem to be clad with aluminum and/or copper. I don't know enough about the physics to explain it properly, but basically, the inductors excite the electrons in the steel (which is iron), but not in the other materials. So where there are heating, excited layers of steel embracing the copper, it whines. It's very high pitched. Some people, especially if they're older, had too much rock and roll or earphones, or worked in a load environment, can't hear it at all. Some people with particularly acute hearing or sensitivity are driven nuts by it. A lot of people hear it, but can ignore it. Gnarls, for you and your husband, I think the only thing is to use cast iron or enamelled steel, or get gas.

Dilly- If you have the option...I don't know that I'd do a vaulted ceiling. If the beam was running the other way, dividing the kitchen and seating/eating areas, I think it would look really cool. As it is, I think it will detract from your design...range is not centered, island is not centerered...and that beam is going to be going across the entire space. Of course, it's up to you and your DH, but a flat ceiling would bring the focal points back to your bay window and banquette, your views, your fireplace, your range hood, your island pendants, etc. Notice Deedle's picture and how your eye sees the vaulted ceiling and it draws you to the fireplace (which is centered) with matching cabinets and windows on each side. Follow the line back and the pendant lights and the island are also centered. Just my two cents :)

Aloha! thanks for sharing your thoughts! As for the desk -- actually, it will not be used as a desk since our office desk area is right by the kitchen. It is just a breakfast bar type of area. But I wanted a lower countertop (30" vs the 36" height in the rest of the kitchen) in case some activities such as kneading call for it. A desk base cabinet allows for it without customization. I was also pleased to find out that the desk base is only ~21" deep, which will allow me to use 24" deep countertop (to be flush with the side panel of the tall cabinets) and still have a decent overhang. I'm planning to store dishes in those drawers. The void to the left of desk base is also not meant for sitting. It will hide the pet feeding zone, a stepping stool and my innovative towel rack (can you tell I'm excited about that idea?). Does any of those three layout options (of the tall cabinets) speak to you?

Me, guilty of overthinking....never happens! (smile) You've got me pegged very well!!! Thanks soooo much for your input once again. remodelfla, to answer your question about DO....they come in a stack so can't be separated. Mine will have the availability of convection in both ovens which is another plus. I was appliance shopping today for a Frig and DW and when I told the guy the brand of DO's I bought, he went on and on about how wonderful they are so that was further confirmation. backinthesaddle, Yes, I am committed to the corner pantry. I tried to get rid of it earlier to do a cabinet wall pantry but it drove up the cabinet costs significantly so I'm sticking with it because it is a lot less $$ to build and will provide LOTS of acessible storage as buehl mentioned. cheri127 , Glad to hear I'm not the only one "hiking" to my cooktop! Perhaps it'll keep me fit as I get older! :) sarschlos_remodeler, thanks for the input about placing MW next to frig as I'm still contemplating that decision. My leaning toward the island is because I could grab leftovers from frig, set on island, get dishes & silverware (stored in island), then reheat and eat. Plus MW would be closer to baking center if I needed to melt butter, etc.. AND it would allow upper cabinet next to frig to be used for water glasses and additional storage. O.K., I'll stop 2nd guessing....until the next major decision! :) You are all the best! Thanks again!

These photos do not include the island countertop which would extend 30 inches with leg supports.

Where does the door on the bottom lead to? If it's another room, then you have a walkway right through your kitchen work area. You could solve that problem by replacing the sliding doors with a window, put the sink under the window, and move the range closer to the sink. Is the range wall an outside wall? I think you could move it down a bit and add a window on either side for more light.

Your island looks to be a good proportion, I don't think I'd make it any longer or narrower.

Its a laundry room door- and the other door is a pantry door. We cannot move the sliding door.

So if you need to keep the sink on the island, then center the range, only to have equal work space on either side of it. I'd also get a counter depth or built-in fridge.

Why so many pantries? The one on the side looks clunky. Since you don’t have much counter space on the island, I’d make a counter instead of pantry on the side. Microwave, coffee maker, snack drawers, etc can go there. The pantry next to the refrigerator can be bigger.

I agree with both of emilyam's posts. You need 15" overhang for comfortable seating at counter height (maybe 18" if you have a tall family--see NKBA guidelines linked below), so make the island only 42" deep, and add more prep space to the left of the sink. Make the work aisle a few inches wider, and center the range on the sink. Most folks here will say do not put the sink and range back-to-back, but prep work is done beside the sink, so the work areas are off-set anyway.
