Comments (27)When you let sweaty items made of sandwiched material (bras) sit in the hamper, mildew and bacteria grow in the middle layer and might not get totally washed out. Strongly salty water kills the odor making bacteria/mold so that is probably why it works. A giant bag of salt at Sam's Club is pretty cheap, so that might be your source of salt. It's too bad chlorine bleach is a no-no for bras as that would kill off everything living in the middle layer. I use hot water and oxyclean and it has been enough for me. Maybe I will pay more attention to the supermarket shelves and see if there is some sort of disinfecting additive that can be added to the prewash (assuming that your model lets you put a prewash in front of the delicate cycle). If I had your problem, I would prewash by hand using a little bit of detergent and gently knead the wet mix into the bra's problem areas. It's your choice to knead solely in your hands or knead on top of a sponge for softer kneading of the fabric. Then toss in the wash without rinsing out. If that doesn't work, I would escalate by diluting some mouthwash and using that to kill germs and sterilize. I would experiment to find an economical ratio of water to that brand of mouthwash. Those prior two methods are easy, but if they don't, I'd try using an antibacterial soap and then rinse out most of the soap that comes out easily as I depend on the washer getting rid of the rest of the soap residue. If you have no antibacterial soap or its killing power is too weak, then try head & shoulders shampoo as the next alternative but that will take extra rinsing out since shampoo has fragrance in it. As antibacterial handsoaps go, they range from the weak 0.1% triclosan to the robust 0.3% triclosan (the cheap handsoap in the commercial cleaning products section of Sam's Club)....See MoreIlluminations Is Gone Now Too
Comments (10)Illume was the original candle company and they're still in business with fabulous scents. The original owner was Lynette Reed and the candles and fragrances were unique and beautiful. They started out as a small candle shop in Santa Monica. After attracting the interest of investors, lluminations became the retail outlet for the company while selling Illume candles wholesale to other retail outlets. Illume and Illuminations parted ways in 2002. Yankee Candle bought the company in 2006, a death knell to say the least. It totally lost its panache in my book at that point. Wally Arnold did some neat things with Illuminations and the stores were beautiful, imo. So, if you're still looking for those wonderful types of scents and fabulous quality, then give Illume a try. Archipelago Botanicals also manufactures a line of candles that rival Illume's. If you have the opportunity and they have what you want, please use the store locator on the sites and shop with your local retailer. :-) Illume Candles Archipelago Botanicals...See MoreFunky smelling washer (not what you're thinking)
Comments (13)Yes, my BELOVED Tide washing machine cleaner comes is foil packs, not pods. It is strong, but so fresh, herbal and clean smelling. Tide Boost pods with Febreeze in the Victory Sport scent are near identical to the scent of the Tide WM cleaner packs. I use them for sports clothes, and they work SO well. Only able to find them on Amazon, and they are $$$, but I only use one a week. Love them!...See MoreHow to Avoid Funky Smell
Comments (18)Here in Nebraska we have basements, and usually that's where the 'furnace room' is located (ours has the furnace, the water heater, various pipes and a big drain in the middle of the floor) but it's the floor drain in there that can start to get a sort of sour smell if it's dried out for whatever reason...My parents' have had a sewer smell from their floor drain so I'll take sour over that any day. Anyway, the solution recommended by the plumber is to pour a couple liters of water down that drain if it starts to get funky smelling, which worked for our situation but the problem at my parents' house needed a bit more work by the plumber to fix. When a house is designed so that it's basically one or two large rooms (open floor plans!) any funky smell is going to be detectable throughout - keep the ceiling fan (if there is one) running on low, run the ac/heat, open every darn window in the place...whatever has to be done to air things out so that the house doesn't smell. If the toilets don't have water in the bowl, something that can happen when the home has been empty for a while and nobody is using the facilities - that can cause a weird funky smell too. The townhouse I owned back in SoCal was occupied at the time I went to see the place with the realtor, and our current home was also occupied during the (brief) time it was on the market - one of the neighboring townhouses was occupied by a heavy smoker, the people who bought it replaced pretty much everything except for the drywall, used special (supposedly) odor-blocking primer before they painted and it still smelled like stale cigarettes again every three months or so...Some smells are all but impossible to eliminate permanently. :P...See Moresjerin
