I think you're not supposed to mulch iris so what do I do?
Comments (14)Brock, if anybody is guilty of writing too much, it is I, appreciate your input on the matter. I believe you are correct, it's Chinese or Japanese roof iris aka crested iris (did some googline). I did see zone 5b somewhere which is the colder limit for them, and I definitely think there is a difference b/t 5a and 5b, but I might be able to squeak some things through anyway. Now that is distressing that they may not survive the winter. I just set them out this afternoon, new area where there is no protection, and will have to mulch (or something) for the winter and expect to lose them. There are too many similar in this class to know exactly what to expect. If they make it through the summer, I could pot a few up and bring them inside, but that defeats my purpose as I have enough already to winter inside. They look so nice with that pretty foliage. Yes, I could move some, but I've got scads more plants waiting to be set out. Yes, I agree that some, not all, mail-order retailers exaggerate the zone business because they would lose sales. A topic for another time, tired after setting out 24 plants, used my bulb planter which made things go a little faster. I think I had my tiller set to till and not cultivate, oh well, it had gotten so bad so fast, it needed the extra power, but I'm worried if I could have compromised the roots forming on the Austins I set in there ealier. They should recover....See MoreI think I found a solution to moldy smell in front loader!
Comments (16)THANK YOU for posting this! I have a 7 year old Kenmore H3 pair and our towels have been smelling bad for the past few years. I thought I was just a laundry-idiot and would buy new towels every few months. I ALWAYS leave the door open, use a powder HE detergent and do not use fabric softner. Now our baby's bibs (terry cloth) are starting to smell sour and I have tried everything from bleach runs, to soaking them in baking soda to adding vinegar to the rinse. I have looked under the lip, and haven't seen mold, just what kind of ick you would expect after 7 years of washing our clothes. I am running a HOT Benefect load right now and will soak our towels and bibs in it tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I will have to get a new one with the fancy "clean tub" feature. I can't stand my baby smelling icky....See MoreFunky smelling workout clothes
Comments (27)When you let sweaty items made of sandwiched material (bras) sit in the hamper, mildew and bacteria grow in the middle layer and might not get totally washed out. Strongly salty water kills the odor making bacteria/mold so that is probably why it works. A giant bag of salt at Sam's Club is pretty cheap, so that might be your source of salt. It's too bad chlorine bleach is a no-no for bras as that would kill off everything living in the middle layer. I use hot water and oxyclean and it has been enough for me. Maybe I will pay more attention to the supermarket shelves and see if there is some sort of disinfecting additive that can be added to the prewash (assuming that your model lets you put a prewash in front of the delicate cycle). If I had your problem, I would prewash by hand using a little bit of detergent and gently knead the wet mix into the bra's problem areas. It's your choice to knead solely in your hands or knead on top of a sponge for softer kneading of the fabric. Then toss in the wash without rinsing out. If that doesn't work, I would escalate by diluting some mouthwash and using that to kill germs and sterilize. I would experiment to find an economical ratio of water to that brand of mouthwash. Those prior two methods are easy, but if they don't, I'd try using an antibacterial soap and then rinse out most of the soap that comes out easily as I depend on the washer getting rid of the rest of the soap residue. If you have no antibacterial soap or its killing power is too weak, then try head & shoulders shampoo as the next alternative but that will take extra rinsing out since shampoo has fragrance in it. As antibacterial handsoaps go, they range from the weak 0.1% triclosan to the robust 0.3% triclosan (the cheap handsoap in the commercial cleaning products section of Sam's Club)....See MoreI think I found a solution to moldy smell in front loader!
Comments (3)I believe microban is quaternary ammonium compounds, not very healthy for the environment and it's illegal to use a product like this inconsistant with it's labeling. All germicides are EPA approved for the labeled use only, unless the label states that it can be used to clean out a smelly washing machine, then you are technically breaking the law. Also you must adhere to the dilutions listed on the label. Just my two cents worth....See Moretvq1
