What do you think of slate subway backsplash in my kitchen?
Comments (72)Thanks for the clarification, Steff. I agree the green granite goes better with the autumn colors above. I think I just wanted to make the green granite go with it, because I like it, and because it took several beatings pretty well. But, I like the most recent backsplash better that the green granite, so I just have to find a more suitable counter. Regarding the honed absolute, it seems many others on this website say the same thing. Wonder about any other honed granites that might go well with the backsplash and not have such maintanence issues. Before I settle on the caesarstone, I do want to explore (exhaust?) the options. I saw today (here I go again), in a high end house basement laundry room, a gray concrete counter and sink that I believe would go well. However, I've read about cracking and scratching. Almost done with this particular decision... Thanks everybody....See MoreWhat to do with my galley kitchen?
Comments (14)Thanks so much to all of you! @pricklypearcactus: You're exactly right, I do have to get a professional in here to tell me what is reasonable. The house layout is bizarre in part because it was expanded twice by the previous owners - bumped up once from a small Cape or tract house to one with a full second floor, and then pushed back and out, possibly overtaking a porch. The latter reno was meant to add a first floor master bedroom after the homeowner remarried; that's the reason why we have a full bath off the dining room (complete in 80s style, maroon and grey tile plus a jacuzzi tub!) We're here for the long run not because it's the most amazing house ever, but because the schools and commute are great, and the fact that it is on a busy road means we would probably pay double to get the same size house in even marginally better condition in this neighborhood. @eelena - we don't have a family room in addition to a living room; we are just outside DC and (some) houses are smaller here. The living room is where we spend ALL our time, and I probably can't or wouldn't change that. The room gets tons of light and has a picture window that overlooks the backyard where the kids play. @herbflavor: The den and office (which were probably small bedrooms in the original house) function well as is; the wall between them had been removed previously and we added French doors just so that we could use the den for closed toy storage and a pullout couch for guests. However, as you all point out it's insane to have 2 dining areas in a house of only 1900sq ft. I've lured the kids into this front "breakfast" room to eat most meals, but it's not the best defined space. The actual dining room is a wasteland of lego creations - it NEVER gets used. If I could transplant the kitchen there, and tear down the wall between it and the living room, that would be perfect... but our main plumbing stack is in the center of the house, and I can't imagine that there is any way to remedy that easily. My realistic options - at most - would either be to steal some space from the util/laundry area as above, or as suggested by Joaniepoanie, whose beautiful appropriately wide galley kitchen I've been admiring here, somehow push the kitchen forward to the breakfast room. I haven't gone there yet just because it would literally mean the kitchen is at the front door... and as much as I hate my galley, I like that I can talk to my kids in either the living room or the front room while I'm cooking. Well, back to the drawing board (courtesy of Ikea software). If anyone knows any great kitchen people in the DC area who might have good ideas for such an awkward space, I'd love any recommendations....See MoreWhat do you think of this backsplash in my kitchen PHOTO
Comments (16)That happens to be one of my all time favorite backsplashes. Unfortunately, I don't believe it works with your cabinets because of the two tone. Two tone cabs (to me) lean toward a more classic traditional feel. That backsplash (again, to me) reads a bit more earthy. It's not that it doesn't go with the individual colors of your cabinets, I believe it's because of the two tone. It's hard to read your countertop color on my monitor, what is it? I see that your uppers (beautiful BTW) have glass fronts and shelves. The shelves look to have a slight greenish cast to them. What if you were to do a mini brick (assuming you like that cause of the Fire and Ice pick) in a very pale green glass? It would tie into your glass shelves? This is from Oceanside Glass, Elevations, Color Midori Matte, 1x2 offset joint (I think). Just as a kinda idea of what I'm talking about. I didn't search a bunch of sites... just went to Oceanside cause I thought they'd have something along of the lines of what I'm talking about....See MoreWhat do you think of these tiles for my kitchen?
Comments (40)Hi Melis, Wow! Your kitchen turned out amazing! So I see you are now ABB huh? Welcome to the club. Glad to hear you won't allow that decision to be rushed. No! No! No! You went thru HE-double hockey sticks to order the cabinets. I remember! So I agree, don't settle until the bs tile makes your heart sing. I still have not installed my backsplash...don't ask...but at least I did purchase and decide on the layout, thanks to the awesome people on GW. I will have to do a search of my own thread to tell you exactly what my tile is if you are interested. I know computer monitors colors vary, but I think the tile is very close to the paint color you have which eam44 pointed out looked nice. I totally agree. It goes really nice with your soapstone, cabs, and the island slab. Here is a close up photo of my tile. It shows the slight linen texture. It's subtle. Ignore the spider vein, oh whoops, I mean the "coral" patterned tile at the bottom. Ha! You'll have to read my ABB thread to understand about the spider vein tile. :-)I remember they are handmade tiles by Jeffrey court. I think they were $16-17/ft? I still love them and pet them every so often as they wait to be installed. I chickened out doing it myself. Other priorities had to come first. (big sigh) Anyways, whatever you choose I'm sure will be as perfect as the rest of your kitchen choices. Big congrats!...See MorePaul F.
