My 2 cents worth, which may not be what you want to hear...I love the 2 tone cabinets and feel that backsplash, at least how it looks photoshopped, looks a bit wild and distracting to me. The cabinets appear classic and with understated elegance, and I'm not getting that from the tile. Sorry not to love it.

I agree with rhome, for me it looks too busy and takes away from the beautiful cabinets. I love the colors, but how about trying the backsplash with less accents? Good luck!

I agree about the backsplash being too busy. I don't want to speak for rhome410 but i think he means your cabinets have a timeless appeal about them that would never go out of style. They are just beautiful!!!!

That happens to be one of my all time favorite backsplashes. Unfortunately, I don't believe it works with your cabinets because of the two tone. Two tone cabs (to me) lean toward a more classic traditional feel. That backsplash (again, to me) reads a bit more earthy. It's not that it doesn't go with the individual colors of your cabinets, I believe it's because of the two tone. It's hard to read your countertop color on my monitor, what is it? I see that your uppers (beautiful BTW) have glass fronts and shelves. The shelves look to have a slight greenish cast to them. What if you were to do a mini brick (assuming you like that cause of the Fire and Ice pick) in a very pale green glass? It would tie into your glass shelves?

This is from Oceanside Glass, Elevations, Color Midori Matte, 1x2 offset joint (I think). Just as a kinda idea of what I'm talking about. I didn't search a bunch of sites... just went to Oceanside cause I thought they'd have something along of the lines of what I'm talking about.

The lower cabinets are a natural red birch.

Light fixtures are antique pewter.

Knobs and handles are antique pewter with copper rim.

Floor is Peshtigo Cherry Maple wood

gglks and remodelfla are doing well communicating what I meant...timeless, a bit traditional...Classy and serene. Beautiful in a quiet way.

I looked up 'understated' and I found the following: unpretentious, exhibiting restrained good taste. When I looked up 'elegance' I got: dignified richness and grace, and clever aptness and simplicity.

That's what I meant. :-)

Couple people mentioned classic and traditional. What examples or types of tile or style would fit in this catagory?

I am no way a decorator and have no clue to styles.

Here is a link to the FKB of kitchens that have mixed cabinets. Perhaps it'll help you to visualize or give you some ideas. There are lots of choices that would work and it doesn't have to scream traditional. It's disappointing to find a backsplash you love and have the feedback tell you it doesn't work for your particular kitchen. Alot of people use subway tile, crackled... glazed in traditional applications. Or stone of some sort. I"m a lover of glass tile, not necessarily a "traditional" choice but certainly can give an understated elegant look. (aka... not too busy). Red Birch happens to be a wood I love and I'm thinking that I'll have DH build our kitchen cabinets out of it... if I ever get that far!

You don't need to go diagonal, though. I think you need less color variation on the field tile and fewer accents...Overall, just less visual activity. Doesn't have to be blah or boring, as long as it doesn't fight with what you already have going. It could be dramatic and rich, or light and neutral. It could be all one color and texture, or it could be a main color and texture with either texture or color used as accent. The finished blacksplash slideshow will be a good place to start. See what ones you love best, then ask for opinions if you need help to narrow things down.
