Cutworms? Do a google search for pics, habits, and preventions. They feed at night, so you would not see the culprits, but there are ways to "control" them. Nature's adaptations are amazing: From the link below: "Cutworms are caterpillars that feed on the stems and leaves of young plants and often cut them off near the soil line, hence their common name. Although there are many important species of cutworms, the black, granulate and variegated cutworms are particularly destructive to flowers. Each cutworm differs slightly from the others in details of habits and appearance, but their life histories are generally similar. Adults and larvae are nocturnal and hide during the day but become active on cloudy days. The overwintering forms of cutworms occur in the soil either as pupae or mature larvae. In the spring, the hibernating larvae pupate. Adults begin to appear in the middle of March. Females deposit eggs singly or in clusters, and each female can lay as many as 500 eggs. Under optimum conditions, the eggs hatch in 3 to 5 days, and the larvae develop in 3 to 4 weeks passing through 6 instars. Pupae mature in 2 weeks during the summer and as many as 9 weeks in the fall. Some of the cutworms can produce as many as four generations each year in the southeastern United States." mo13 - Hello(!)...The plant that you are questioning and have encirled in the photo is Ipomoea tricolor...the other MG plant is Ipomoea purpurea... The Ipomoea tricolor plant that you have is either Ipomoea tricolor cultivar "Blue Star","Flying Saucers" or "Pearly Gates"...Pearly Gates is always white,but the Blue Star and Flying Saucers can produce blooms that are white or almost white... The seeds of Pearly Gates are always dark colored,but Blue Star and Flying Saucers have both light beige and dark seeded forms... The seeds of Ipomoea purpurea can range from almost white through various shades of tan,brown and black... There are numerous species of Morning Glories that have white flowers and there are numerous species within the genera of Calystegia and Convolvulus (the genera most often associated with the overly fuzzy term of 'bindweed') that have flowers that are a color other than white...additionally not all plants plants tagged with the overly fuzzy term bindweed are twining or spread by underground runners... Thanks, Ronnie! That's great you will be growing vines indoors this year! I will be growing some vines but only a minute fraction of what I grew last year. Will you try the trick of photoperiod conditioning the small plants as Dr. Yoneda describes on his web site? I have not tried it before, but I think Ron has and it works. Finally someone who knows morning glorys!! i took some seeds from my neighbors morning glorys that come up every year. i also buy plants from my local nursery that are annual here in my MN climate. today i finally planted 4 morning glory plants that i bought but could not plant because of the weather. i had them outdoors when the temps were 50 degrees or higher during the day and then brought them in. i planted 2 heavenly blue plants and 2 mixed colored plants and by 6pm tonight the heavenly blue plants were practically dead with the leaves 100% limp. the mixed colored plants are doing just fine so i am wondering why this is? also, the leaves on the HB and the mixed ones are different. in addition, the morning glorys that keep coming up (from my neighbor) have different leaves also!! i too am clipping this post. thanks for any info you can provide me with!!
