White Morning glory Q pic

Hi,

I have a question for all the MG experts. I got some white morning glory seeds (from the store) and planted them with my blue ones.

I recently read about bindweed and how it looks like white morning glory. I am wondering if all white morning glory plants are bindweed.

I am attaching a picture of the vines. The lighter green leaves (circled in red) are the white morning glory ones. The first bloom came up today (Aug 28th.. really late) and it was pretty big; almost twice as big as the blue ones in the pic.

Can someone clarify this for me? Should I be trying to kill them instead of taking care of them?? :(

I don't know much about MG's except that I have a few varieties growing. I do have a Texas bindweed and it looks nothing like that. It came up in a planter and I didn't know what it was. Since it's contained I decided to let it grow. The flowers are very small with a pink center. I have no idea if there are other bindweed varieties. Maybe it's a Moon flower vine. They have huge white blossoms. Below is a pic of Texas bindweed.

The leaves don't look typical of a bindweed. You can google bindwed and check the links for info and pics of both kinds of bindweed to see if the flowers and leaves look anything like your flower that bloomed today.
You didn't say what time the flower bloomed. Some morning glory flowers are much larger than others and can dwarf in size the flowers that you already have growing.

Bindweed is an aggressive plant that will take over if you let it! Will try to post pictures showing native Texas bindweed bloom and leaves. I think some of the japanese types offered in the Park's seed catalog are like you described, and I am sure they are not the only ones offering this type. I always have to wait for warm weather, not having a greenhouse, before I can start the seeds. My 'Heavenly Blue' are only with their two characteristic first leaves, so I do not expect bloom until late August or even September. I cannot see how you will get many flowers if you just buy the seed now, but others might find the plants grow much faster for them. I have found they bloom sooner for me if restricted to large flower pots, as compared to the same planted out in the ground somewhere.

Bonbon, you do hear the locust, crickets and whatever else critter-bug out there. Baci, I'm not sure what the name of that one is. I planted a pack of Crimson rambler (NK lawnand garden) and a pack of Dwarf Early Call (American seed)ths pack had different colors in it. Actually that just started growing out of no where, cos a few packs didn't take the 1st or 2nd time... Did I mention that teepee one is from ONE plant? That was another surprise. I had them in pots and thought they hadn't taken so I dumped the dirt into my garden and 'willaw'... Arum, you're right about 'never getting tired of seeing them!

mo13 - Hello(!)...The plant that you are questioning and have encirled in the photo is Ipomoea tricolor...the other MG plant is Ipomoea purpurea...

The Ipomoea tricolor plant that you have is either Ipomoea tricolor cultivar "Blue Star","Flying Saucers" or "Pearly Gates"...Pearly Gates is always white,but the Blue Star and Flying Saucers can produce blooms that are white or almost white...

The seeds of Pearly Gates are always dark colored,but Blue Star and Flying Saucers have both light beige and dark seeded forms...

The seeds of Ipomoea purpurea can range from almost white through various shades of tan,brown and black...

There are numerous species of Morning Glories that have white flowers and there are numerous species within the genera of Calystegia and Convolvulus (the genera most often associated with the overly fuzzy term of 'bindweed') that have flowers that are a color other than white...additionally not all plants plants tagged with the overly fuzzy term bindweed are twining or spread by underground runners...

The seeds of Calystegia and Convolvulus are almost always a dark color,although there are a few species with light colored seeds...
