I rooted cuttings of a blue MG years ago in a glass of water, it's worth a shot! I may sprout from the base where the original leaves were. I've got a problem with ground hogs here and they just love to wait until a bud is set to open to chew off the base of the plant at night!

I've been able to root Moonflower vine cuttings. It's worth a shot. The worst that will happen is the cutting won't root.

Thanks for the advice. I have put a container of water ontop of the soil next to the base of the vine and hung the top portion into the water.
Since it's a day from when i noticed the attack, do you think i should cut the bottom of the vine (like you do with cut flowers in a vase?) to open up the end?
Also - any chance the bottom rooted portion will regenerate?

If it looks wilted I'd snip the end so that it can draw up the water. If it looks ok than leave it be.

nanzey z10 - Yes,the base of the MG should be able to re-sprout new vines at the nodes where the leaves were attached...keep it watered and don't apply any type of fertilizer at this point...

Update:

OK - Today I had a chance to really get down and take a close look at the poor victim - I see green! There's a teeny tiny hint of a leaf coming out of one of the original nodes about 2 inches up from the base.
Also - the top half that has been sitting in the water - is still green and i see a bud forming at the top. It doesn't look like any roots have formed yet, and it looks a little slimy in the water (i didn't end up clipping the bottom since it had already been in water 2 days.).
I changed the water today - will watch it closely.

Othere than that (and a few aphids I found on the buds of one of the other MG plants) there is not much going on.
They are thin and stringy and only have between 3 and 5 leaves per plant. The leaves are small (less than 2 inches) and sad looking, but buds are coming out on every plant.
They are all staying the same hight (about 2 feet). NOT at all what I expected them to be doing when I planted them.
Wondering if our recent lack of hot weather has something to do with it?
I've been using a water meter to watch the soil - it takes a while for the pots to dry out - so i'm only watering about once a week or less.
any ideas?

nanzey - Glad to hear that both separated parts are still alive...

Remove any browned and/or slimy parts from the stem in the water...give the bottom a fresh clean cut and change the water to prevent the buildup of any pathogenic organisms...some Superthrive added to the water will help new root formation...

UPDATE!

Ron - after seeing your post I did what you suggested.
I snipped another inch off the bottom of the vine and stuck it in some fresh water (i actually dipped it in rootone first - which seemed futile since most of it came off as soon as it went in the water - but i guess you never know)

Well it sat for over a month - 2 weeks ago - WHOA! little tiny white roots are sprouting along the bottom half inch!
I couldn't believe it!
I've been busy this week and now the roots are about 2 inches long and turning purple!
What should I do?
Do I just dig a deep hole and gently push them in?
I'm so nervous at this point that i'll kill it.

I have to say tho - i do wonder if i'm doing something wrong with these things.
I've got 4 others growing now, none over 4 inches tall - it's like I got some "miniature" mg seeds or something!

nanzey - Glad to hear that your plant has sprouted roots...if the rooted stem won't easily reach the ground >then don't undo your work by breaking it...bring the soil up to the plant(!) >like as in fill a container that is tall enough to accomodate the stem sufficiently with good soil and plant the rooted stem...your MG will then be nicely rooted in a container...be sure to keep it well watered(!) as containers can tend to dry out quickly >especially any small ones...

I recently had the same thing happen in my garden to a few of my MG's and some passifloras. The stems looked like they had been sliced a few inches from the soil. It didn't appear that any part of the plants were eaten, just cut. I have lots of new growth coming from the remining stem and had put the severed vine portions in a glass of water. They've been putting out blooms but I haven't even checked for roots. I just want to know what's slicing my vines at the base!

Cutworms? Do a google search for pics, habits, and preventions. They feed at night, so you would not see the culprits, but there are ways to "control" them. Nature's adaptations are amazing:

"Cutworms are caterpillars that feed on the stems and leaves of young plants and often cut them off near the soil line, hence their common name. Although there are many important species of cutworms, the black, granulate and variegated cutworms are particularly destructive to flowers. Each cutworm differs slightly from the others in details of habits and appearance, but their life histories are generally similar. Adults and larvae are nocturnal and hide during the day but become active on cloudy days. The overwintering forms of cutworms occur in the soil either as pupae or mature larvae. In the spring, the hibernating larvae pupate. Adults begin to appear in the middle of March. Females deposit eggs singly or in clusters, and each female can lay as many as 500 eggs. Under optimum conditions, the eggs hatch in 3 to 5 days, and the larvae develop in 3 to 4 weeks passing through 6 instars.
