Sycamore tree - is this normal?

I understand that some bark peeling is normal for these trees, but THIS much? This is the mess since it was cleaned up last Thursday. This is my third summer in this house, first time I’m seeing it anywhere close to this.

Happens every year right around this time.....midsummer. Some years more intensely or heavily than others but completely normal nonetheless.

Yes, Sara, that confused me a lot as a child. I lived in a road named after its Lime trees so I knew what they looked like but I couldn't understand how you could get juice out of those tiny hard green balls smaller than a pea. I assumed they must just ripen better in sunnier climates!

Yes, Mexican Sycamore, when mature, will be smaller than American Sycamore. From your perspective, it probably doesn't matter. It will grow to 60-80' at about the same rate as the American Sycamore and its roots are similarly aggressive.

Its scale. I'm making the assumption from the name you give this species, the wall and the state of the tree that you are in the U.K. Or Ireland. If that's the case Acer pseudoplatanus is a widespread self sowing weed tree in cities and you'd be better off just removing it and planting something more garden worthy further from the house. Someone has already hacked it about quite a bit. If I have misidentified the tree and my assumptions about location are wrong, ignore me. But it's still scale, wherever you are.

Do you not live within driving distance of a stream or lake? There's probably source material for cuttings there...and you certainly wouldn't want them this time of year.

It's usually a sign of rapid growth of the tree.

its a maturity issue ... going from the course bark stage.. to the smooth bark stage ... its based on the type of S you have ...

maybe after a storm you could get some pix of the leaves... and it can be further IDd .... either here.. or in the name that plant forum ....
