Help me choose grey type of color for livingroom
Comments (15)I'm afraid I do see purplish undertones in the Nevermore. I could be imagining it. No. Not imagining the purpleness in Nevermore. Thinking in terms of undertones will only make it more difficult to truly see color for what it is. Things become much clearer - and easier - when you understand that every color belongs to a hue family and undertones are something completely different. Just like LRV, there is a data point for hue family. Once we identify hue family, we can then plot (either physically or just in your head) the color on a color wheel. Like I did in the infographic below. You can see the yellow circle highlights the PB or purple-blue hue family. Do you see where Nevermore Grey is plotted? It belongs to the B or blue hue family and 'lives' overnear the purple-blue hue family. That's why you are seeing overtones of purple. Nothing's hidden or "under" anything. The color simply belongs to the blue hue family over near purple-blue and it's obvious to you. Everything is starting to look blue to me except the Software. Maybe it's because of all the blues around it. Software looks sort of brown in comparison so that's why I was reluctant to give it a chance. When you know what hue family a paint color belongs to, the other colors around it become less influential - because you have a conscious, objective reference for hue. I plotted the other three colors you're now considering so you can see where they 'live' within their hue family. Now, you can compare on TWO data points, LRV and hue family. Here's a list of color data points: hue family, value, chroma, and LRV. When you string all of them together, it's called a color notation. A color notation is an objective second opinion that helps you analyze color. In this infographic, you can see the color notation directly under each color name. Hope that helps. Comments (6)Hey Lisa, Grizzle Gray has some warm green undertones, which is a good thing based on the decision to keep your warm toned trim throughout the house. Since I wanted to find something in the same realm, I came up with the options, all with warm undertones and lighter than Grizzle Grey to give you a nice contrast. First is Gray Clouds, second is Reflection, and third is Olympus White. And I would choose between either Reflection or Olympus White, not both. These are all Sherwin Williams paints so they should be of the same quality as Grizzle Gray. Also, I think adding a wallpaper in the dining room could be fun and interesting and they have tons of beautiful removable wallpapers or temporary wallpapers on the market these days. Check out Chasing Paper, Tempaper, Brewster Wallpaper, Joss & Main, or a local high end wallpaper dealer!...See MoreNeed help choosing light gray color to go with reddish orange floors!
Comments (0)Hi all, I've done lots of renovations to a previous home, and also built a home within the last year, but this paint color is just killing me. We own a rental property, and are doing some renovations in between tenants this summer. One is repainting the entire unit all one color, a light gray. I'm very familiar with grays, more so with benjamin moore, but I know a fair amount of SW too. The issue is that the downstairs living/dining has these reddish orange hardwoods. I find that they def bring out the pink/purple undertones of paint colors. When i bought the place, the woman had painted the entire unit in this fleshy beige color, the entire downstairs especially looked like a bandaid. That's the color that is on the walls in the pics I will attach. Admittedly it doesn't look bad in the pic, but in person it was very pinkish. A few years ago I painted the downstairs Edgcomb Gray, but even that appears a little bit purplish to me. So where do I go from here? I have read many posts about chroma and color family, but at this point I'm still struggling. My current home has BM White Wisp, and I love it. But it definitely has a green undertone too it that I think would be accentuated by the orange-red in the floors, right? I've been looking hard at BM Intense White, but again it has a greenish undertone. What undertone do I need to look for to neutralize the color in the floor? I want to use a super light gray, as the townhouse is in the middle of the row and doesn't get much natural light. Thanks in advance for any advice or recommendations!...See MoreNeed help choosing light gray color to go with reddish orange floors!
Comments (51)I bought 5 samples today, one of them was a white for trim so just 4 for the walls. After considering what I already have, I decided to pick ones that had different undertones. As an example, I didn't get Horizon, b/c it's so close to Paper White, and i have that color in two rooms in my current house. It's pretty, but it definitely reads blue. I think this is partly due to my trim being Snowfall White, which is very close to Simply White. I think with a truer white it might appear a little more gray, although still cool. I ended up with Intense White, which is actually what I had wanted to use in one room instead of the Paper White. Also got Shoreline 1471, which reads a little more gray than Horizon, although I feel like the purple will come out I wanted to make sure. Also got Classic Gray ElleN, I'm going to give it one more shot. And Swiss Coffee, b/c my sample is so old for that one. I feel like with what I have and the new, I should definitely be able to come up with something. I buy these small flat canvases at Walmart in a 3 pack and they work amazing for paint samples. I have found that even foam board can curl pretty easily, and I'm not a fan of painting directly on the wall anymore, have screwed that up too many times. ElleN I agree Halo is very green, so I don't think it will do me any favors. And Gray Mist is not a very fun color, but I can't believe it looked so yellow on your walls. I think you're right, they might have mixed something wrong. Here's a couple of pics of our old kitchen with it. It was a great neutral with the floors, cabinets and countertops....See Moreericakn
