If I divide a Biennial (Foxglove)during its on year will...
Comments (9)Well, I would not divide a single plant, Digitalis purpurea grows in rosette of foliage spreading out from a central stem (this may not be the correct botanical description). Perennials that are easily divided have lots of shoots popping up all over from the root system. The exception would be if your "plant" is actually a clump of 2 or more individual plants. This sometimes happens when they self-sow, or are winter-sown, they grow very close together. I have some winter-sown clumps of Foxglove out in the garden that grew huge last year. One of them is actually a clump of 2 or 3 seedlings I planted in a little hunk. This Spring I plan to separate and move those, so we'll see. Digitalis purpurea is very easy to start from seed, a cheap way to get lots of plants!...See MoreWoo! Hoo! I'm in Pipevine Heaven!!!
Comments (13)Maryann - Sunlight Gardens Nursery has A. macrophylla in stock still at $10/quart pot. They are in Tennessee, I believe. There is a $25 minimum order. I know, a ways from you, but I don't know of any place closer. Niche Gardens has A. tomentosa (but I think macrophylla would do best for you), but they have a $40 minimum order. LINDA - CONGRATS, CONGRATS, CONGRATS! I'd love to have some PVS's, but I don't think I have enough yet to feed them. Oh, it hurt to say that!!!!!! My tomentosas are just now putting on tiny new leaves. My macrophyllas are growing, but don't have that much foliage yet. My serpentarias (all 3 of them) would not be enough, and my A. clematitis - have about 10 stalks of that. I should buy more, but if I do, I'm afraid in 3 years, I'll have nothing but pipevine in the yard! LOL! Enjoy them. I check my leaves right now to make sure I DON'T have any because I don't think I have enough to sustain one cat yet. Maybe by summer's end, it will have grown a bunch and I will get some as they fly south. Susan Here is a link that might be useful: Sunlight Gardens...See MoreHelp! I've got spring fever! Comments (34)Brenda, it is nice when even family members are enablers, eh? LOL!! I actually keep telling my husband "There's this garden in Western NY that someday we have to go visit!" I would love to see your beautiful garden some day. The different areas you have planted and the variety is amazing. I've been lusting for some more photos from you. Would love to see what you have on file for your veggie garden from last year if you have any time to post some. Goodness! I finally cracked open the catalog for my local nursery who I really like to support. She's a true plantswoman who I so enjoy chatting with, etc. I just sent an email over to her with my "list" (is was a long one) of plants to put aside for me for pickup when they open. It's a terrible habit I have of giving her a list each year for pickup. But my birthday is always right around when she opens, so it's a birthday present, right?!?! LOL!...See MoreI love foxgloves, but they are frustrating me!
Comments (1)I would just cut off the tops of each bloom stalk, but leave a few spent blooms/pods at the bottom of each stalk to finish drying and harvest those. Martha...See Moreerasmus_gw
