Front landscaping help
What would you do here? I’m thinking the large bushes need to go and be replaced, but I feel stuck and can’t picture what would work well here. I’m in zone 5b, Chicago suburbs.

I understand and wasn't inimating differently. In the sketch I uploaded, one would enter the mudroom door left of the screen, its walk connecting directly to the driveway. The area left of the mudroom door was not included in the picture I used, so cannot be seen. It's merely suggested. I since pasted on a sliver more of house/driveway grabbed from another picture. See if it makes sense now. I tried to make the point that you must differentiate the use of one door from the other, for the uninitiated guests, but don't know if you agreed with that as you did not mention. Comments (3)"Here is a straight on picture." It is straight on in the sense that you are pointing the camera at something and it will not photograph around corners! Other than that, it would be hard to call this a picture that is in line with the door ... or slightly overlapping pictures ... or 180*. This is a scheme for arranging, not one of specific plants. Comments (11)The thing about boxy straight lines is that is what your house facade consists of (replacing the portico would help to some extent). So you are always going to have them on display in that part of the property whatever you do with the landscaping. Apart from that aspect the main thing that is noticeable is that the beds in front of the house are too shallow to balance the height of the facade. So after you get rid of the disliked existing foundation shrubs think about coming across the walk into the lawn with additional bed space. Enough to look (from street distance anyway) like more than just a strip hugging the base of the house. And of course renovating the lawn would help also....See MoreErica Johnson

2 years agoThe shutters don't enhance the home and the entry really needs some type of canopy to protect it from the rain and snow.

You can bring the others (except the one on the far left) down in size, if you are willing to cut into them with a good hand clipper. Bring the down in size, but also create holes for sunlight to get in a allow for new growth. They will look awful for a time, but they will recover.
In the left side, I can see a Japanese Maple. Plant it out from the corner of the house far enough for it to mature. It will frame the house. Create a circular bedding around it with mulch, lambs ear, ferns, and hostas. Then add two more yews to the newly pruned on under the picture window. Plant some perennials like Stella D'Oro Daylily, Cranesbill geranium, and Astilbe in front of the evergreen shrubs on both sides.
Other plants to consider are hydrangeas. My two favorites are Oak Leaf and PG.

2 years agoI like this idea for a portico. Of course yours would not have such a steep pitch. I would remove the railings, since you don't need them. Glad to read you are getting rid of the shutters.
