Front Landscaping Help

The current yuccas and bushes were placed by the original owners and we’d like to remove and replace. We live in Iowa, need low maintenance, and would like something flowering...appreciate all ideas, thanks!

By photographing the scene from so many different viewpoints, you're making it hard to use pictures for giving feedback. Better to stand in line with the front door, not too far away, and take all your pictures from that same viewpoint. Pan (pivot) from far left to far right taking slightly overlapping pictures. Give us 180* view where you show background that includes the distant neighboring homes & yards.

Heaven scent gardenia is hardy to -10 degrees F. They are easy to keep at 2' x 2' indefinitely with once a summer pruning. Many camellias grow successfully in zone 6B if protected from winter wind. Some can be kept at 2' x 3' easily with light pruning once a season. Shrubs that drape over the wall help add to a fuller look.

Could you please retake the pictures? Stand on the city walk, in line with the front door. Take 3 SLIGHTLY overlapping pictures that pan from left to right, including space beyond the ends of your house. (We'll see the neighboring houses as background.)

The thing about boxy straight lines is that is what your house facade consists of (replacing the portico would help to some extent). So you are always going to have them on display in that part of the property whatever you do with the landscaping. Apart from that aspect the main thing that is noticeable is that the beds in front of the house are too shallow to balance the height of the facade. So after you get rid of the disliked existing foundation shrubs think about coming across the walk into the lawn with additional bed space. Enough to look (from street distance anyway) like more than just a strip hugging the base of the house. And of course renovating the lawn would help also.

The large bush on the right looks like a giant yew. Is it? You can bring the others (except the one on the far left) down in size, if you are willing to cut into them with a good hand clipper. Bring the down in size, but also create holes for sunlight to get in a allow for new growth. They will look awful for a time, but they will recover. In the left side, I can see a Japanese Maple. Plant it out from the corner of the house far enough for it to mature. It will frame the house. Create a circular bedding around it with mulch, lambs ear, ferns, and hostas. Then add two more yews to the newly pruned on under the picture window. Plant some perennials like Stella D'Oro Daylily, Cranesbill geranium, and Astilbe in front of the evergreen shrubs on both sides. Other plants to consider are hydrangeas. My two favorites are Oak Leaf and PG. Stella D'Oro Daylily: Cranesbill geranium:

"Here is a straight on picture." It is straight on in the sense that you are pointing the camera at something and it will not photograph around corners! Other than that, it would be hard to call this a picture that is in line with the door ... or slightly overlapping pictures ... or 180*.

This is a scheme for arranging, not one of specific plants. To get suggestions for what plants could make these shapes and sizes, you can take the picture to a local nursery or the regional forum that applies to your area.
