Alternative to a spice pull out next to stove?

Hello. My revamped kitchen will have a somewhat awkward 9" space to the right of the over-the-range microwave. The plan is to put a spice pull out there but I'm wondering if there might be a better use for the space.

Aside from the obvious issue of keeping spices right next to the stove, this cabinet will reach all the way to the ceiling and I'm 5'3", so it will be impractical to keep spices in all but the lowest portion. Open shelving is not an option.

Any other suggestions for what do with such a long, narrow upper cabinet? Does anyone know whether mason jars fit in a spice pull out? I do some canning and have quite a few empty mason jars so if they would fit there I would be satisfied with the spice pull out as jar storage.

You could do a cabinet for stemware that you rarely use.

What if you did a blind corner pullout instead of the 15" cabinet & super susan to the right of the range? (See link below) You could have the cabinet people make the cabinet front into a faux set of drawers to visually match the drawers on the left side of the range to get your symmetry. The door would be hinged on the right and open toward the sink wall. My Mom did this in almost the exact same scenario at the corner (- the faux drawer front) & it works great. Then you could also have a bigger spice pullout next to the sink. We have a large spice pullout (15" wide & 3 tiers) & it holds our salt, pepper, cooking oil, non-stick spray, flavorings, spices, sprinkles, etc. I don't think they called it a spice pullout though--maybe an undercounter pullout pantry? Ours does have a faux front with a drawer over cabinet look to make it symmetrical with the other side of the range. I would see about changing the exterior of the spice pullout to look like a cabinet vs. a column as there is no matching column on the other side of the sink which makes it look awkward & out of place to me. Unless you're going with a large D-shaped sink, I would be tempted to eliminate the cabinet on the end of the sink run, slide the DW down to the end & enlarge the sink to a 36" base that would allow for a very nice size double sink. I'm going to link the long thread about spice storage that Sayde was talking about. We have a small kitchen. But we were determined not to commit the mistakes of our past kitchens regarding spice storage. A previous home had the little plastic stair-step shelf (from BB&B) in an upper cabinet. It was OK, but while it made the spices slightly more visible than without the stair-step, it still was jumbled and hard to fumble through. It didn't really allow you to reach quickly in and grab a spice jar while cooking. Worse though, was our pre-reno kitchen with the vertical pull-out spice rack. DH swore that no matter what, that kind of spice pull-out would not be a part of our renovated kitchen. He hated bending to see the spices, the bottles moved around and shifted too much in the pull-out, you had to move from one side around to the other to find your spice, and when the rack was pulled out it impeded traffic in the kitchen. So we looked at Loves2cook4six's solution (see linked thread, 3rd post from the top), that Sayde also mentioned, of bottles in a drawer with labels on the top of the bottles. We also thought of something similar to what Northsong mentioned above. DH nixed that, cause he felt we'd never get around to transferring the spices we buy to the other bottles. So another requirement was that spices stay in their "OEM" bottles. Then we saw Cat_mom's. Eureka! An insert from Rev-a-shelf in a shallow drawer next to the range. The insert holds the bottles at a slant, and everything is instantly visible and accessible. No bending, no squinting, no walking around, no reaching, no moving a bottle to get to another. The insert is a nice wood. And we can keep the spices in their OEM bottles. Although our kitchen is small, we were able to spare a shallow wide drawer dedicated to spices. Eliminating the vertical spice pull-out we had before meant our drawers gained a few more inches. DH comments on how much he loves the spice drawer about once a week. Cat_mom's is pictured on the linked thread about 1/4 the way down. Then Mysterymachine discussed it with Cat_mom in that thread, and installed something similar too. Hers is pictured about a little more than 1/2 way down the thread. There are plenty of other ideas. It's a really great thread. Does anyone have a filler pull-out next to the sink base?

I hve 2 3 inch spice pullouts on each side of my bumped out 27 inch deep sink base. Mine were ordered from my cabinet company though. I really like them alot. However, the bumped out sink makes me lose the back 3 inches or so of the pullout on the right since I can't access it from the other side. Not a big deal since the other one is empty. I have small spacers on each side of it since it did seem like it was going to rub on the sides with use. These are not pulled out all the way.

Spice pullouts are not the easiest to organize. Things tend to get lost in them. Great spot for cutting boards or cookie sheets.

I agree with Sabrina - this might be a great storage spot for seldom used cookie sheets and other bakeware.

I have a 9" upper and lower cabinet next to my range. In the lower cabinet I store cookie sheets, cutting boards, and cooling racks. In the upper cabinet I store small tupperware. Neither is a pull out, just a normal cabinet with a swing door. I also have a small drawer in the lower cabinet and I store parchment paper and foil (which are handy next to the oven). Not sure if that helps, but they do provide some storage value.

Agree that tray storage is great for a 9" lower, but a 9" upper is just tricky. I'm not sure it would hold enough spices in the lower couple of shelves to justify its extra cost, but then I have two shelves full in a lazy susan, so might depend on your collection. We have a basic 9" upper cabinet with shelves, and it's found uses -- the small containers in one, a pair each of wine/shot/espresso cups in another, a hot pad for sore throats with some Throat Coat Tea in another... If you are scrabbling for every inch, then go spices, but otherwise, I'm not sure I'd bother.

A pullout is an expensive add-on and would not be worth it to me for mason jar storage. I had a narrow upper cabinet in one kitchen that I lived in briefly. It had a swing door. I kept my main cutting boards there and it was very convenient! I’ve actually always wished I had the same cabinet in subsequent kitchens. If you stand the cutting boards on end, they will use up a lot of the height. If space allows, you could put a little shelf or two in the upper part of the cabinet and have storage for items that are not used often. Maybe vases, or candles or holiday items. Make sure the shelf height is fully adjustable so you can adjust as you acquire different sized items over the course of time.

Another option is to keep some of your cleaning supplies in there. It would be a good size for spray bottles and the tall boxes of dishwasher detergent. Keep the ones you use frequently toward the front for easy access. If you have little ones in the house, this is safer than under the sink.
