*finally* found the right fixture for my low-ceiling bedroom!
Comments (58)Thanks southernheart :) I know it's not everyone's taste, but I thought I'd share because we have a 70s house with the 8' ceilings and it's been nigh on to impossible to find an interesting ceiling fixture, much less one that reflects 'us' as much as this one does. It reflects us so much that last night realized what it's been reminding me of this whole time: amphibian egg masses! :) Backstory: DD and DH volunteered last year and are about to do so again this year with Metro, the local environmental authority, to find and monitor amphibian egg masses in one of Metro's preserves. They loved doing it, loved writing up field notes, it's become a strangely large part of our lives--because of last year's field notes DD's maybe going to write field notes about wildlife observation at the preserve in general -- pretty big honor for an 11 yo :) -- and darned if the little cipollini don't look like amphibian egg masses, some bigger, some smaller, some that didn't 'take' at all...so it's a wonderful, if somewhat odd, sign of spring up there :) (and don't worry, we won't share our personal image with any potential buyers when they come through years from now LOL) pbrisjar, I've been there the first year it opened, to get DH some unreal chocolates for VDay. OH yeah, it's definitely great. If you come visit, we'll go there, o.k.? :)...See MoreLight fixture qs: should I use the same fixtures over the peninsu
Comments (3)I can't comment on the size of the light fixtures for the peninsula, but I do like your choice. In my kitchen I have 3 different kinds of light fixtures - one over the table, another one over the kitchen sink and then 2 the same over one window and the back door. Pot lights elsewhere. Personally I like the different fixtures - not too matchy matchy - but maybe it is not for everyone. They all have something in common though - the metal in them is antique brass....See MoreLight fixture for large bedroom, low ceilings
Comments (17)I also thought of that Kathy Ireland fixture..:) I have it saved as well the diameter is though smaller than what you were looking for..not that it makes it a "no"..but I remembered you wanting a bigger one you can though, besides contemplating the overhead lighting.. a) go for sconces. besides lamps etc. they're higher..gives a different feel. b) consider installing a skylight. totally changes the perception of the ceiling's height it is a personal preference..and a matter of what one's accustomed to. I grew up having overhead lights. True, our ceilings were much higher then.. Together with that, you should do the best with the space you've got I broke the rule of "no overhead lights with standard ceilings"..where I could of course..I'm happy I did-it breaks the expanse of the ceiling..brings more interest..you're less concentrating on that "oh my ceilings are low" but every room is different. some are square, some are rectangular....some are darker, some are naturally lighter..take your own unique space into account say, in the master that's kinda long, we installed a skylight...put a pendant in the corner, over the sitting area..installed sconces...also have table lamps of course in DD's room that's small and already has a skylight, we didn't hardwire anything, but I bought this vintage wall chandelier..a long sconce, essentially..it's not overhead lighting yet it looks like one...:) that brings the feeling that chandeliers usually give..and what's important is the feeling. The feeling, you can get in many ways, as I've learned... In other rooms that are either smaller or somehow more conductive to have this overhead lighting, I went with flush mounts or semi flush..it looks totally fine. They're all on dimmers-we saw to that..and there are other lamps in the rooms, table ones next to beds, and floor ones, and sconces..so you don't rely on this overhead light only..but you have it. You have layers of lighting, and it gives you all the flexibility. And you control the feel and the function..which is obviously a very good thing. That taught me there are no rules set in stone..you look at your room and you see by what means you can get the feel and the function you're after. And if it's a mix that's the best of course....See MoreWhat is more pleasant for a bedroom light? Recessed or one fixture?
Comments (6)I have both recessed and a table lamp. when I need a lot of light (packing, cleaning, etc) I used the recessed. And btw, 4- 6" cans are plenty for a bedroom. (unless your room is huge) 6 cans would be too much. You can see two of them here in my room when we were remodeling. they are 6" can's, LED's. BTW, Costco has the Retro-fit canned lights for super cheap. maybe 4 of them for 30 bucks? all you need to buy are the light bulbs. So cost for the actual cans are nothing. ask the electrician the price for four retro fit, and you'll supply them. (if you can get them at Costco) then do a bedside lamp on a nightstand. if you want to do one center light, a flush mount, you can do that too, and still have a table lamp just get a center flush mount light w/more than 2 bulbs....See Moreeinportlandor
