Please help me layout furniture in my awkward living room.

Hi, for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to arrange furniture in this room. My goal is to have lots of comfy seating. I want to keep the sofa, 2 red chairs and barrel chair. I also have 2 extra chairs that I would like to add, (I included pics of these. )

The space is overwhelmed by the huge 11’ fireplace hearth. I am including area layout along with pics of the room.

Nice and large room! IMO, you are trying ot squeeze too many chairs into the space. Add to that the dining room chars and barstools... chair overload. In the photos you've posted, the fireplace is being left out of the equation. It needs at least one chair closer.

Have you tried the sofa on the window wall?

There is also a lot of unused real estate between the living room area and dining area. I would enlarge the seating area to include some of this space.

To define the areas, you could use sofa with a console table or cabinet back to back with the dining area.

@Allison0704, thank you for your ideas. Unfortunately, its impossible to put a chair closer to the fireplace., as there is not enough room. The sofa is right up against the hearth.

les917 - the answers are no and no. No TV, and we cannot (and I don't think want to) move the fireplace. nanny2a - thanks, you are totally right. The coffee table is shown slightly in the wrong spot. I envision it being a coffee table sitting in front of the large sectional (hence wanting it to be the length it is). It will not be sitting in the center of the room like shown. Does anyone see any concern about clearance between the chaise and the fireplace (where one would walk to go from center of living room into the dining room). What kind of clearance do you think is needed/what is the max length and width I could get away with for a chaise/daybed in that area? And does anyone see an issue with the fireplace sitting in the middle of the room, and nothing really being oriented towards it? That is one of my primary concerns with the layout I've put together...

justgottabme: Yes! excellent plan! The Tv needs to be in that corner next to the fireplace -- either mounted on the wall or sitting on a console or cabinet. Having a cabinet in that spot would anchor that whole corner. And more excellent ideas above too! Love the idea of bookshelves in each of the corners -- perhaps just try basic Ikea Billy shelving -- or other build-it-yourself shelves (try stores like Targer or Walmart)-- just to see if that plan will work for you? Or look for vintage shelving or bookcases on your local Craigs List! Swivel chairs can be found -- check your local Craigs List! But for now -- once you move the TV -- try placing one sofa facing the fireplace -- and another one facing the window -- forming the classic L-shape.

Thank you for replys. The room is big, so if you put the sofa like in Kitch4me photo ( we had it like that before, I will attach a picture), it looks massive in the middle of the room. Maybe it would work with a smaller sofa. It also seemed too far from the TV. So, I moved it closer, but then looking from other angles it looked like sofa is in the way of the door. Gracie,01, I will try to arrange it like that and take a picture. My only issue is it would be off centered. See where the hallway opening is and the master bedroom door. Turning a sofa there, sofa would be looking at the master bedroom door, not at the TV. Also, it seems far again. The room is large if the furniture is too close to the walls. Moving it towards the center of the room works better, I am just stumped on where to put the TV. I do appreciate the advice, thank you for taking the time.Disregard the two chairs, I was trying to see how would it look with a loveseat there. The sofa was moved farther back at first, but it looked awkward.

Holy moly, so many great ideas and feedback here. Thank you all so much! And boo - I spent a lot of time trying to decide on window coverings for those weird skinny windows, LOL. As least they're cheap JC Penney shades and won't hurt too badly when I replace them. I like the dark wood trim and didn't want to cover it up, so that's why I chose those and not curtains. But I heard everyone loud and clear. ;) Storage definitely is an issue with this house - there's exactly none. All the storage space was sacrificed for a big open feel, and even the closets are postage-stamp size. Thus the big old coffee table thing (storage!) and the entertainment center (storage!) and the end table (you guessed it, STORAGE!). I love the Besta idea, though! Didn't even know something that cool existed. I am worried that placing the main seating against the half-wall will put the seated person too far from the TV; I do a lot of gaming so I tend to sit closer for full immersion. I was considering moving the seating way closer to the TV, which would create a big space by the half wall, and then putting a narrow table or something back there, i don't know. I'm so terrible at this stuff, that's why I'm so glad Houzz is a thing! A sectional, huh? How does one find a sectional that doesn't scream 80's media room? Off to google I go... :)

I think putting two matching chairs and a small cocktail table in the widow nook would be nice. Don't be afraid to make two or three separate seating areas instead of trying to make it one big awkward area.

Your fireplace and sitting area live their own lives. Make a focal point with your FP and layout furniture around it. Put couple chairs from both sides of FP.

How many people live or visit your house? I'm being serious. Five chairs, a sofa, plus another chair you'd like to use. Add in the barstools and it looks like a trying-to-be-hip coffee house. Look in any style/design magazine, you won't see that many chairs. Heck, look at the Brady Bunch, they didn't even have that many chairs!

@Celery. Visualization, Rendering images. I appreciate your comments, unfortunately, the dang fireplace is so akward and huge. putting another chair would block the entryway. see pic below.

@Lora Tollefson I love your humour, thank you for your comments. My goal is to sit lots of folk comfortably. We have large gatherings, and everyone wants a comfy chair, seems that no one wants a stool or kitchen chair.
