do you have a favorite combination in your garden?
Comments (8)Hi again! This is still something I think about all the time. I am trying hard to plant groups of foliage/flowers that will make one another 'pop'. Click on the images to enlarge. Here's one I tried this fall -- coreopsis 'sweet dreams' with aster 'september ruby'. It will be better when the aster fills in a little more. I do have some of my perpetual salvia nemarosa caradonna in here too somewhere. They are all thru the garden, as I am hoping their repetition will tie things together. And here's another combination that happened serendipitously -- 'rozanne' weaving thru carex with a variegated butterfly bush above, a caryopteris 'grand bleu', black-eyed susans (not pictured), a white daisy (also not blooming in this photo), against that yellow-leaved cornus. It's pretty for a long season. This is a satisfying combo too -- sedum with heuchera. This is a nice June-July combo with salvia, delphinium, scabiosa. I think I've added some siberian iris to this spot to complement the peony and add some spiky foliage. I also added some dianthus, to give it a pop of hot, raspberry pink, and to tie into dianthus in another bed. Please, please share some combos with me! Thanks, ML...See MoreDo you have a favorite Borscht recipe?
Comments (2)I've always loved beets and I like borscht a lot. I do like cabbage in mine, and I use beef bones or beef stock as the base. I usually start with home canned beef broth so that negates the need to let the broth simmer then sit so the fat can be skimmed. Borscht Recipe You need: ◦8 cups beef broth ◦1 pound slice of meaty bone-in beef shank ◦1 large onion, peeled, quartered ◦4 large beets, peeled, chopped ◦4 carrots, peeled, chopped ◦1 large russet potato, peeled, cut into 1/2-inch cubes ◦2 cups thinly sliced cabbage ◦3 Tbsp red wine vinegar ◦1 cup sour cream ◦Salt and pepper to taste Preparation: Bring 4 cups of the beef broth, the beef shank, and onion to boil in large pot. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until meat is tender, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Transfer meat to work surface; trim fat, sinew and bone and discard. Chop meat; cover and chill. Cool broth slightly. Chill in pot until cold, at least 4 hours and up to 1 day. Spoon fat from top of chilled broth and discard. Add remaining 4 cups broth, beets, carrots, and potato; bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes. Stir in meat and cabbage; cook until cabbage is tender, about 15 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Stir in vinegar. Ladle soup into bowls. Top with sour cream. Serves 6. Annie...See MoreDoes Gardenweb have a favorite white paint kitchen cab color?
Comments (8)*BM White Cloud and Cloud White are different colors! I have Cloud White, and Cloud White is the color I hear more often, not White Cloud! Ironically, I was thinking about those two similar names with the intention of NOT typing the wrong one... Confession: I mixed a couple shades of white I was unhappy with together, and the resulting color match is the same formula as the color match to Cloud White (total coincidence). In that sense, I didn't even pick my white, and I had actually already rejected Cloud White as being too "creamy" for my space. Now that it's done...I like it and it's warm, not stark. All that rambling to say that you'll probably be just fine even if your conditions aren't perfect, with lighting and flooring, etc. in place. :)...See MoreDo you have painted cabinets? white? or a color?
Comments (10)I do not think you have much to lose by doing whatever color you desire on the island. In the case that you needed to sell and had to cover up something unique but less marketable it would be a small piece to paint over instead of wall cabinets. For the record, I just painted over bg oak cabs in a half-formula of Martha' Stewart's whetstone grey, it looks awesome with the rest of my finishes! My plan was for a deep, rich grey on the island but when I painted it with my sample colors i decided I did not like it and painted it to match the perimeters. Not exactly the same as your situation, but just putting it out there in case there is something useful to you in there....See Morechinacatpeekin
