Do you have painted cabinets? white? or a color?

I have had painted white, painted cream and cherry cabinets in previous houses. We are doing a kitchen reno/addition in our new but old (1880s) house and I want to keep it classic, but me. I am pretty set on doing white cabinets on the perimeter but I'd love to throw a bit of color for the island (like a dark blue). So I'd love to hear from the people that went with white and regret it, or love it and why. I'd especially be interested in hearing from those that used a different (not white or cream) color and still love it or regret it. I keep thinking back to the early 90s when forest green was really in....

I do not think you have much to lose by doing whatever color you desire on the island. In the case that you needed to sell and had to cover up something unique but less marketable it would be a small piece to paint over instead of wall cabinets.

For the record, I just painted over bg oak cabs in a half-formula of Martha' Stewart's whetstone grey, it looks awesome with the rest of my finishes! My plan was for a deep, rich grey on the island but when I painted it with my sample colors i decided I did not like it and painted it to match the perimeters. Not exactly the same as your situation, but just putting it out there in case there is something useful to you in there.

My upper cabinets are ivory, the same as my walls. My lowers are a pale sea glass blue. My island is black with Carrera marble. My house is prairie style 100+ years. I chose painted cabinets because the rest of the house has so much dark wood in built-ins and trim.

As long as the painted trim and cabinets are close in hue and value, one can have some flexibility. There are so many whites, warm, neutral and cool to choose from, so temperature plays as important a role as hue and value. Of course, one's wall colors must also be harmonious and unified with the trim's and cabinet's paint.

Hello SunnyCottage! I would agree that your paint project is going to creep further aground! Here's some food for thought, mined from the web. "A room with crown molding most likely has other trim as well, such as around doors and windows. Painting the crown molding to match the other molding in the room creates a cohesive environment. If the other trim in the room is stained, stain the crown molding to match. One exception is when the ceiling seems low in the room already -- a crown molding that is painted a different color than the walls may make the ceiling seem even lower because the highlighted molding draws the eyes upward. In this case, you might opt to paint crown molding and walls to match." I took one of my little forays into Photoshop to explore. This example shows painting the crown to match the ceiling (which was also given as an option to optically raise a ceiling on other websites). At least that is the intention of my doctored photo, but I think my attempts provide a laugh for experienced photoshoppers.

Certainly it’s true that the F&B colors are limited to relatively few; I’m overwhelmed with the number of BM or SW colors available and I like the curated F&B selection. It’s easier for me. Yes, it costs more than the BM I’ve always used in the past, but what I’m seeing so far, having used Skimming Stone, Schoolhouse White, Skylight and Borrowed Light on the walls in my current project (in addition to Wimborne White on trim and most ceilings) it is truly breathtaking. The quality is noticeably better. I’m using F&B from now on.

We are a week or so away from finishing our small galley kitchen and went with painted maple, only in taupe rather than the usual white. My husband was dead set against white and over a long time of planning I got there too. I expected to use a medium stained wood but kept finding them all either too yellow or too red in tone. I'm really pleased with the taupe; it feels like a nice neutral and it works really well with the rest of the house.

I have white perimeter cabinets (thermofoil, not painted) with blue pearl granite. I have a navy island (painted) with white statuary marble. I love it!

We have ivory lowers and pale green uppers and island. We really like the combination, and are not worried about it looking like the forest green of the 90's because the green we used is not trendy now, reads like a neutral and goes with the style of the house and the rest of the home's decor.

In our previous kitchen, the perimeter was white and I painted the island black. The island also had big onion feet. So it looked like a piece of furniture. I liked it!

Perimeter bases & uppers = SW 7004 Snowbound
Island = SW 6249 Storm Cloud
Granite on all = White Ice

Looks fantastic together.

I love the idea of white cabinets and a painted island - what about a muted grey? What are you considering for your countertops?

Mine are not quite cream, not quite gray -- Martha Stewart 'Gull'. Looks lovely with the grey-green walls and dark counter; I like that it is a rich, calm color.

Lisa_wi posted a great kitchen with grey-green lowers and white uppers. I loved this shade of green and strongly considered it for myself. Looking back at her post, I still like it a lot!
