Window treatments

Hello. I am an older single teacher looking for advice for window treatments. Budget is an issue. I am drawn to window valances. The dilemma is how high to hang them, how wide the valances need to be, and how much of an overhang they should have for each window. The space is a great room. The space around the kitchen window is the tightest. I am considering this to be a do it yourself project using charcoal curtain panels as the fabric. I’m attaching a picture of that as well. I am open to any and all suggestion. Even if you are opposed to the valance idea. I’m aware that style is not popular right now. But it is what I’m drawn to. Thanks in advance for all your help.

I am not opposed to valances, nor do I let what's in style overly sway me (at least I hope I don't? :)). Valances can add that custom touch that "finishes" a space. I'm just not sure your space "needs" them. Do you find your windows look unfinished or too bare? If considering valances, I'd opt for a fabric with some colour to it. Unconvinced the grey panels you've posted will add enough texture and colour to elicit a "wow" after all your hard work. As for the overhang, how about testing it with scarves or t-shirts (whatever fabric you have on hand) to see what length make proportional sense to your eye without blocking too much light?

We are not window treatment people either, but have started to add some as we've reno'd/decorated a few of the rooms in our house; two bathrooms and our office. They really do help to finish off a room. That said, we're not covering our kitchen bow window, or the DR bow window, though I might consider something for the DR window at some point--just for the window panes themselves, not to cover the whole bow-unit. We used Hunter Douglas' Designer Screen Shades in the Roman Shade style (ours are mounted inside the frames becuase of our window style/frame depth). The shades are very clean-lined and range in sheerness. With the sheerer weaves/fabrics, you can see outside with them down and they allow a lot of light in.

@Melndo The walls are Benjamin Moore Rockport Gray: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/color-overview/find-your-color/color/HC-105/rockport-gray?color=HC-105 Our window is north facing as well. There is a large Japanese maple near the window so we don't get a ton of light there. I have the floor lamps, two table lamps and a light on the ceiling that isn't in the picture to make sure the room gets enough light. We actually use this room as a music room. There is a piano on the wall that isn't in the picture. Hope this helps! Glad you like it. :)

I would do something simple like Hunter Douglas Duette shades in their opaque fabric with the top-down/bottom-up option. They can be easily inside or outside mounted, depending on space available. Here are mine in my master bathroom. See how I have the top rail lowered to be able to see outside, but rest of the window is covered, but still allows light through. You can have them all open, all closed or partially open like my photo. This is the third house that I have used this type of blinds throughout the house and been very happy with them.

I would extend the fabric/rod beyond the window to open up the space as much as possible. a Textured Linen panel (matching the wall color) on rings for easy open/close. Limit the decor, a small room would benefit from trim paint the same color as wall color. a simple top down/bottom blind for privacy and light control Blinds.com offers great options.

Thank you for your comments/ideas... I do feel the windows look finished. I’m not 💯sold on my fabric choice either.
