First you need a better furniture layout. Probably a larger rug would help. Next you only "decorate" at normal room height level. Usually 8-10 feet.

Did you really select a red, white, and blue color scheme for a home's great room?

Unfortunately, the two seating areas don't relate to one another.

In general, I usually recommend the rug run in the same direction as the length of the room.

This could be an alternate layout for your room.

A rug that has more of your colors IMO makes the room more cozy for starters.

You have a nice space and I like your bright furniture. Before you worry about your bare upper walls, you need to fully decorate the people level. Table lamps, end tables, floor lamps, window treatments, people-level art, tall plants in textured pots. Part of the reason you don't like the space is that it is mostly lit from above. Which unfortunately gives the space the ambiance of a retail store.

Once you fully decorate the people area you may find that you like the high ceilings and don't need to add anything on the upper walls.

Many say to decorate only the lower 1/2 the room - not to decorate over eye level, but I like when there is art on the upper 1/2 of the room, and especially if viewable from a balcony above.

I like those bright couches! And the rug Beverly posted pull them so nicely together. Thats a big wall! I saw a show where they had a giant print - by giant, I mean one single print that was maybe 15' tall - it was very cool. Just an idea for the big wall..

@BeverlyFLADenizer The TV is upstairs in our loft area, that's where we all hang out. The below living area, is more for entertaining. Thank you for the seating placement recommendations, I wanted to create two separate seating zones. Yes, will definitely get a larger rug for sure. We were considering moving the orange couch set and investing in two sectionals, for more seating, not sure yet. The couch is more of a deep orange color than red :) I didnt realize the red, white & blue theme. Yes I guess the two grey chairs do make it seem like that.

@deegw Thank you, yes tall plants, end tables and floor lamps are on my list. I like the idea of people level art.

@Jennifer Hogan, thank you for the pics. I like the first and last picture with the coffered ceilings, it would look great from upstairs. I also like the third picture with the simple trim design on the top.

I had few additional questions:

1) I would like to create two separate seating areas, is it ok to use the same rug but in different sizes, one large rug for the orange seating area and another smaller rug for the blue seating area. Will this look too disjointed? Should I just use one big rug and combine both seating areas??

2) When I add the end tables/floor lamps/plants etc...do they all need to sit on the rug, or should only the furniture be on the rug and the other items outside the area of the rug?

I am trying to decide which size rug for the area and whether I should take into account the other side tables that will go on it or not.

Draw a floor plan with the furniture in the 2 seatings areas and post it here. That will help determine 1 large rug or 2 smaller

You actually don't need to decorate above eye height, unless you want to. Most designers just leave the high walls and ceilings alone unless it's for artwork around eye height. Below we'll add some images to help you see what we mean:
