Nini804 - I want it to look more symmetrical as well Renovator 8 - I appreciate your comments and am sorry that my postings seem so disorganize. I was posting as I got new drawings and can't seem to get more than one picture at a time in a posting. Will get rid of the brick ledge and use just one siding element. Am hoping the next drawing will open up the front a bit. Annie Deighnaugh -I think the overhang is a detail over the garage doors. Circuspeanut- I hope that the rooflines will not be staggered! I am assuming it looks like this now because it is just a sketch . An update - I spoke with the architect today. I suggested we pull the garage more to the right and have just a corner of it attach to the house. He agreed that that might help to place windows in a more symmetrical fashion. He was going to try to have something back to me today, but I didn't get anything yet. Thanks for all your helpful comments!

Agree with Virgil about context being everything, so without that, there's lots of guessing. We also have a house on a narrow lot (vintage 1919) and houses nearby, though not as close as in one of the photos above. We did take into account which windows line up with which of our neighbors. On one side, we used obscured glass in the bathroom window and the other window has a cellular shade that is always down. It still brings in a wonderful soft light. the other side of our house is downhill and we leave the dining room window shades halfway down to obscure the roof of the one-story house, but open up the view to the sky. My point is that you just want to make sure you've thought all that through so you are not surprised or disappointed. Our house is very light for this climate, but it might look odd on a floor plan to see where the windows are placed. I would like to see some sketches of your house with a gabled roof, though.

Would do either brick or stone over the foundation only and siding above that. Use only one kind of material in the gables -- perhaps horizontal siding the rather than vertical. Would not put any hip roof on any part of the house. Stay with gables and steep slopes with straight edges at the bottom of the slopes all around for your gutter. Would change the roof to have one and only one ridge line height -- the higher height -- and decrease the number of gables to be one facing the left end of your home, one facing right end of your home and one facing the end of the angle of the garage -- not over where the garage doors are now shown . Would not cut corners in the cost to cut corners and create angles in the garage. Would keep the walls leading from the home to the outer left edge of the garage straight all the way to the end and would seriously consider putting two garage doors the same size in that angled end of the garage even if that means adding and additional few feet to the garage length -- definitely would not pour the front yard in concrete for a driveway. Extend the width of the forward facing gable over the front entry to cover both the front entry and those two larger longer/taller windows to the right of it. Extend the depth of the forward facing gable to cover a porch at least 6' deep. Where you currently have windows in the upstairs in gables, the slopes of which will take away room from your upstairs rooms, add dormers there rather than full gables enabling you to have more/larger windows and more room / headroom in the upstairs rooms. I am confused you bought a new build that is nothing like the style you like and honestly this is a spanish style home and the mordern farmhouse look is not working for me.I agree the garage door needs some glass but not that garage door IMO the front door does not work either .Why does the front walk not go directly to the front door? So many things that are just off. Yes to removing the shutters and I like the idea of black windows but you have white windows and very little trim and the white grids will not look great with that bit of black trim. Maybe get an exterior designer to help bring this all together
