Quick without thinking too much... gut reaction for countertops
Comments (43)Hmmm. Concrete? Maybe I could find the coloration in a quartz or grantite or something in the lighter realm. Don't think I could ever get DH to go for concrete counters. p.S. Really like the floors in that pic. LOVE that gaudy granite! Bmore: I currently have a beadboard backsplash run on the vertical. The counter installers put a nice bead of clear caulk between the counter and the BS but still the crumbs congregate in the beadboard grooves. I would think running it horizontally would make that problem much less. And these boards are 8" wide so the first seam would be that far off the counter. Thanks though!...See MoreMarble countertops, marble floor too much?
Comments (11)Don't get me wrong, we love wood floors. But 10 years later they look bad...very BAD. I mean it's embarrassing to have people over it's so bad. It just seems a shame to put something in that 10 years later will require my parents to move all the furniture out of their house again so that the floors can be refinished! We definitely like the marble floors with minimal veining - it's way too much for us to have all those gray carrara stripes going in all directions. She actually was thinking we'd have to get the heated flooring. I guess we just need to look for a warmer grayish floor that won't clash with the carrara counters. We also thought of marble floors in the kitchen and wood everywhere else? It's a total open floor plan, though, so we would need nice transitions. Anyone ever used these metal edges you see in the tile stores (link posted below)? I just held the marble tile up to the store display...you have to imagine a matching wood floor on the other side. PS - How do I paste in an actual photo? The instructions/help indicate there is supposed to be a "browse" button on the "preview" step of posting my message. Am I blind? I don't see anything indicating posting a photo when I preview... Here is a link that might be useful: metal edging...See More3 Countertop Surfaces-- Too much? Pic Posted
Comments (5)Thanks, epressler. I think I finally figured it out, pic is posted separately. Mtnrdredux, your kitchen sounds amazing. My fabricator is giving me a hard time about the wenge wood butcher block island, because I have a utility sink there. I've heard that Waterlox makes the wood completely waterproof...what sealer did you use, and do you find this to be the case?...See MoreWalnut countertops and marble backsplash? Too much?
Comments (10)Thanks for all of the input! I was second guessing myself on whether wood countertops on top of wood floors in a narrow space would just look like a lot of wood or whether it would help balance all of the white cabinetry, and I wasn't sure if the marble was too much on top of that since some kitchen designers warn about using too many elements. But I want all of the pretties in my kitchen! I'm going to go for it. Yay, waterlox! Trailrunner, I'm so happy to hear you're loving yours after 8 years--I'll definitely be going with it. I had misgivings about wood countertops until I ran across all of the reviews of waterlox. And the marble fabricator I'd go with has a great acid wash treatment that reduces the appearance of etching. And it helps that I know I'll be okay with some dings and chips and scratches, especially since my current place has a cottage/farmhouse vibe to it. I loved the quartz in my last place, but it chipped around the undermount sink after five years. I think i'll be less upset with wood or marble since I'm not expecting the same durability...plus with wood I can always sand it down and refinish it, and marble can be rehoned....See Morehula1974
