Are you sure the model number is correct? The model number you posted seems to be the one for the coil (CNPVP4821ATA).

A 13 year old Carrier furnace still has 5 - 10 years of life left and worth repairing. You need to get another opinion from a service company you trust.

The 58UVB080-20 is a Carrier Infinity 2-stage 96% efficiency 80K BTU furnace. This is a very nice furnace which is worth repairing by a qualified service tech.

I think what you are hearing at the start up is the inducer motor. It could be simple fix such as cleaning out debris. But it could be the motor bearing are failing and and the motor needs to be replaced. If that is the case it might be an expensive repair ($500 - $1000?).

Have you been doing preventive maintenance on the furnace? If so it is being done by a Carrier dealer?

I am skeptical of a service person who wants to replace a good furnace without quoting a repair estimate. If you did want to replace the furnace, then it will cost much more than $3000 to buy an equivalent model.

He just listened to the sound and said it needs to be replaced. And to be honest, I might have encouraged it a little bit. When It was a little over 5 years old (out of warranty) the blower motor quit and It was about $700 to replace (variable speed AC motor) and I have complained about installing such a high end furnace ever since so he might have been looking to get me into a less complicated unit.

The variable speed blowers for the Carrier Infinity furnaces are expensive. You should have only paid for labor since the parts are covered for 10 years if the furnace was properly registered.

Get a quote to for a repair before you make any decision. You could wait until the fall when HVAC service companies are not as busy and parts may be more available.

Absolutely repair this furnace. It's one of the best you can buy and will cost you a small fortune to replace with a comparable unit.

It is hard to say if replacing the inducer motor will fix your problem. If your furnace has the original inducer motor, then there is a high probability it is beginning to fail.

I believe the furnace in the video is the Carrier 58UVB which is your furnace. The service tech does a nice job explaining the bracket modification and what parts need to be saved and reused from the old inducer motor.
