How much clearance can I get away with for countertop microwave?
Comments (10)FWIW, I ended up getting a smaller Panasonic microwave (not sure of the model number). It was 1.6 cubic feet vs 2.2 of the first one. It still has slightly less clearance than recommended on the sides, but 2.5x what is required above. To get one narrow enough to provide the recommended clearance would mean going down to 1.0 cubic feet or smaller. I'd rather not do that, I'll take my chances with this, and if it overheats, I'll modify the cabinetry, replace the oven, and consider it a lesson learned. Pic below shows the original oven - clearly not enough clearance. This was not a wall oven mount, just a little enclosed space the previous owner or kitchen designer created to house a countertop microwave. Comments (3)What exactly does the KA manual say? (At the moment I can't get onto their site on any of three computers.) Far be it for me to contradict them, but off-hand I really don't see the concern. My wall oven is in a very tight fit, literally wedged into a too-small cabinet, and even so the cabinet wall barely gets warm even during the self-clean cycle. If I were concerned about it, at the very most I'd choose some slightly oversized cabinetry in order to provide a little more airflow around the oven units. For instance, if they call for a 30" min cabinet, I might make it 34"....See MoreHelp me decide - counter space or cabinet?
Comments (6)In our pre-reno kitchen, we had a counter of about that size in just that position. The uppers and lowers were narrow, but functional. The counter surface just tended to collect "stuff": mail, meds, keys, small objects that needed to go somewhere else, and lots of dust. As counter space it was pretty worthless. We currently have the same space with a 12" wide full height cabinet. There are 2 deep drawers on the bottom and a cabinet on the top which we use as a broom closet. As a broom closet it's OK, but not great. If I were choosing for your current situation, I think I'd go with #1....See MorePictures please - built-in Microwave & oven stacked on same wall
Comments (39)@j_bird @oppsie @jgopp @kashmi @Annie Deighnaugh @desertsteph i know this is an old post but for those that went from a single microwave/oven combo to a separate microwave and oven, how did you manage with the wiring? i know the oven/microwave combo was probably hardwired with 220V with no other electrical outlets back there (at least that's how mine is). did you run a new line from a nearby existing electrical outlet to create a new electrical outlet to plug in your new countertop microwave?...See Morepetula67
