Dining Room Furniture for a Small Room? (Photos inc.)
Comments (29)I have passed your ideas about the built-ins to DH. I think this WOULD be the most attractive yet efficient use of space . . .and I've always wanted a window seat!!! We'll see what DH says. He is pretty handy, but he's never done anything like that at ALL. Too bad I don't have more $, because I do know a reasonably-priced, perfectionist carpenter! I am glad that you have pointed out that there wouldn't be much space to store things in the corner units, esp. the bookcase. I had wondered about that, but you've confirmed it. Maybe that bookcase was meant more to display things other than books? I like the idea of storing books behind the doors of a cabinet because it would mean I wouldn't have to search for a bookcase, but I am not sure how practical it would be . . .I find older pieces harder to open/close so I wouldn't want the kids to that regularly. Also, if the books are put away, they probably won't use them, since they'd be out of sight/out of mind. The binders in that room will be moved elsewhere, however! Some of you suggested painting that gold mirror . . .maybe I should. I don't know what to do with it! I bought it "custom" because it went with some other frames I had, but I am not in love with it. I'd rather go for something with more curves, etc.-- old! Ah, so many decorating mistakes I've made! Anyway, this thread has been so helpful! I cannot tell you how much it has helped me!!!!...See MoreI just squeezed a lot of new furniture into a very small room!
Comments (57)nancy-- thank you! And yes, so true . . .so fast! lazy-- I agree with everything you've said. Those things have bothered me as well. Most of the books sticking out I can't change, but someday I will (when the kids are older). I have been looking for larger pieces for the FP and other wall for a long time, ditto for what goes on the FP. Just too hard to find things without a lot of shopping trips to the flea market, and I rarely get to do that! The curtains will change eventually, too. Now I can go in a totally different direction with color, when I have the time and $! val, I see where you are going with the FP but there isn't enough room to do that (such a small room). If I can someday get an ottoman I will remove the table! amj, I will get that pic up for you soon. It does not really look built in though . . .it is nowhere near what I'd like it to look like in terms of how it is arranged, either. lori, thank you-- you rooms have always been very inspirational to me. flower, I would like the floor length idea but not sure how it would work with the chairs against the wall . . .no room to push them far enough out so that the curtains would not be smooshed. Ideas? Thank you again, everyone!!...See MoreToo small dining room for special occasions....
Comments (2)I used the living room. I pushed the couch against a wall, took all the tables and chairs and scattered them around the house, and put two eight-foot-long banquet tables in the empty space. Around here, Thanksgiving Dinner cannot be eaten outdoors most years! The big TV armoire stayed in the LR, so football fans could keep an eye on the games. In the dining "L", I would put most of the drinks and other odds and ends on the dining table, pushed into a corner. We always had lots of crock-pots going because we had the regular dishes and the vegan versions (no butter, no broth, no cream, no meat, no poultry). Luckily, DH and his sister (the usual vegetarian guests) would eat an UnTurkey, so I did not need to make another main dish, DH just put it in the oven after the turkey came out for carving. I think the most we had for dinner was 17. If it were 12 or so, we would put the two banquet tables together side-by-side and have a large center space for the food....See MoreI just purchased a large orange rug for underneath my dining room .
