How do you know when more floor support is needed?
Comments (10)I'm with Brick on this one, too. There's well-built and then there's overbuilt, and it shouldn't be all that difficult to figure out what you've got. The extra loads you're talking about aren't going to be moving around and flexing the structure; you bring them in and set them down, and there they stay. The sub-zero may be heavier than your average Kenmore, but it's not as if you'll be parking a tank in the corner. I know married couples whose combined weights are more than most subzero models! The granite is heavy for a person to lift, but it wouldn't feel like much if you were a house. In structural terms, the farm sink is essentially weightless; so is the hardwood floor. The trouble with all this is that it's pure conjecture. No one can guarantee anything without knowing what you've got. What size are the floor joists? Are they spaced 16" on center? How long are their unsupported spans? What size support girders to they rest on? How well is the girder supported? It's not rocket science, but neither can it be boiled down to "Boy, this stuff is heavy! Better beef up that floor..." The numbers are worth looking at....See MoreHow do you store your extra pillows at night?
Comments (29)[Bellaflora, that's my bed under the window. It's a walnut Empire-style daybed with scrolled ends from about 1830, and it's only 24 inches wide, but I've been sleeping on it since 1977. I was just out of college & just starting my first job when I spotted it at an antique show, and the $240 it cost me seemed like a fortune. I had to eat macaroni-&-cheese for weeks to repair the damage to my bank account, but, hey, it was worth it. The brand-new furniture that my pals were buying during the same period all went to Goodwill--or a landfill--a long time ago, but I figure my bed has at least another 50 years left to go. Anyway, the writer who came to my apartment to interview me for the O at Home article had the same question you did--"Where's your bed?" When I told her I was sitting on it, she paused, glanced at her hands, and then said, "Well, it's a really nice piece. But...what do you do... how do...what if you sometimes want to...um...have...a guest?" I just laughed & told her "I don't have those kind of guests."]...See MoreWhat do YOU do when you can't sleep?
Comments (66)It's no wonder you're having trouble sleeping with that bright light shining into your bedroom. The management of the other building may not realize that it's so intrusive. Perhaps you could ask them to adjust it so that it doesn't shine so directly into you apt. I rarely have trouble getting to sleep, but I sometimes hve trouble staying asleep and find myself awake in the wee hours. It doesn't happen very often now, but the last few years of my working life it was almost every night. I chalked it up to having work related things on my mind. Anyway, what I did/do that works like a charm for me is to play a mental exercise. I'll pick something like places, foods, names, etc., and starting with the letter A think of all of the places/foods/names I can that start with A. When I can't think of anymore, I move to B and so on. Rarely do I get further than C or D before falling back to sleep. An example of places could go something like Alaska, Arkansas, Amsterdam, Africa, Albuquerque and so on. I'm always amazed at how well it works as I would think it would stimulate my brain and make me more awake, but it seems to have the opposite effect....See MoreWhat do you do when you can’t fall back to sleep?
Comments (173)As another sleeper who wakes up at 3:30 and since this thread is still active, I’m here to chime in. I will use the 4, 7, 8 breathing method, or sometimes it’s just 3, 5, 7. I think any set of numbers works so long as they are progressively higher. Another technique I’ve used since college is to imagine my body is full of sand. I then visualize draining the sand starting with my ankles and moving up to each joint. There is some amount of exhaling going on during the draining process but that is not the main focus. I fall asleep before I get to my shoulders and neck. If you get to your head, you have eyes, nose, ears etc. to drain. My third technique is to do kegels. I figure while I’m lying awake what better use of my time? And done properly there is a some serious relaxation involved. Counting animals or alphabetical names just activates my brain. So that’s a no-go for me. Finally, if all else fails I‘ll take a book or ipad into the guest room and read until I fall asleep. I just don’t want my body to associate reading with sleep so it’s my last resort....See More- 5 years agolast modified: 5 years ago
