How do you know when more floor support is needed?

Hi,

We are in the planning stages of a kitchen remodel of our 50 year old home. We were thinking of soapstone or granite counter tops, farmers sink, a sub zero refrig. and hardwood floors. The GC is wanting to put extra support beams under the kitchen floor because of the extra weight of these items. I applaud him for wanting to do this, but it will be putting jacks at in the way places of our basement.

Because of this added expense and the "in our way jacks" we are thinking of just doing corian counter tops and a regular frig. The corian weights 4.4 lbs per sq. foot compare to the 20 of the SS/granite.

How does one ever know how much weight the existing floor will hold? Does our revised plan sound like the way to go? Thanks, Zoey
