Garden Clinic Bulbs New to Gardening

Too late to transplant Gladiola??

live in the California High Desert zone 9 I believe. I have all these Glads in a half barrel. Along with a Geranium and some Daffodils. They have not bloomed yet and last year's blooms were pitiful. I'm wondering if it's too late to put them in their own barrel? Is there any chance they will bloom if I move them now.

They don’t look as if they'll bloom this year. Moving them won’t change that. But doing so, either now or when dormant, might promote bloom next year.

Thank you so much for your response. If I may ask. How can you tell that they don't look like they will bloom this year. Is there something I should be looking for? Besides the flowers of course.

I seem to recall that you're in S FL, treimink? In that case it is really too late for cucumbers till the fall. Any fruit they produce is likely to be riddled with pickleworms. ETA The pickleworm moth lays tiny eggs in the flowers which become encapsulated by the fruit as it grows. So you get fruit that looks beautiful from the outside, but which is crawling with creepies when you cut it open. It's one of the main reasons why people down here usually pull cucurbits after the end of May.

just do it.. and get out of the new owners hair ... move them all to a nursery bed ..... as small an area as you can ... just jam them in there.. and add some mulch .... especially if heave is an issue with small plants .... its usually helpful to know where a poster is... to be more precise with specific winter advice ... in my ground freeze MI ... i could do it until the ground freezes .. though i wouldnt want to be doing such.. if only for how cold my hands would probably get ... just do it.. and be done with it ... you can move them next year.. as your new garden develops ... dont overthink hosta .... they are plants.. not babies ... ken ps: use plastic grocery bags to move them .. unless they are huge ... and if they are.. only take pieces .. who needs all that exercise.. unless you have some teenagers to do the work.. lol ... and keep in mind.. you are moving a root mass... if there are any leaves left.. who cares ....

Yes, too late. What you describe is a warm season grass and they should not be planted after early fall, let alone divided or a hunk dug up and relocated elsewhere. Warm season grasses have a root system that only responds to warm soil temperatures so as the soil cools down in fall, the roots stop growing. Planting or transplanting now just results in inactive roots unable to re-establish in cold, wet or possibly even frozen soil and the plant will very likely die. Or at least the disturbed portion. Wait until spring and the soil warms and you start to see some new growth appearing before you divide or transplant. And if you have never undertaken to divide or transplant an established clump of ornamental grass, be prepared - they have a very dense, congested and heavy root system and it's a heck of a lot of work and hard labor!!

Idon't see why not. Just be sure to water well before and after and try to get as much root as possible. I'm transplanting Cornus Mass that starting to leaf out and they seem to have handle it well. Go for it, but don't delay too much more. P.S. I don't know what it is from that picture.

Well, I was just assuming, given your location, which I was guessing is warm, and comparing with when Gladioli flower here, that they'd already be showing buds. This starts as a bumpy thickening at the centre of the sheaf of leaves. And they're very crowded which would reduce flowering. Maybe I'm wrong. When did they bloom last year?

the usual suggestion.. is to transplant after bloom ... to not interfere with flowering with a lot of stress ...

as to when you give up and decide they arent going to bloom .... is left to you ... at some point.. you just want to get the job done ... so you do it .. and not worry about flowers ...

when you do go for it... why dont you plant some in the ground ... and then next year.. see which perform properly ...

never forget.. the most important thing in a pot is the media.. not the plants... so get a good media for the pot.. and the plants... they can vary wildly ...

even without flowers.. its a nice impact with the foliage ....

ps: other reasons for flower failure may include.. improper fert .. or none.. too many plants in the pot.. improper watering... which can be a function of worn out media that isnt moving water properly thru the planter.. etc .. i bet you are going to find out all kinds of things.. when you disassemble the whole pot .... the hard part will be figuring out what it all means.. lol ... and we will be around to help ....

Thank you so much for all of your responses. I went out to look again and found 3 flower spikes. They r very hard to see. So I decided to just feed w bloom fertilizer. I will dig into the pot after blooms have faded and transplant foliage into good healthy soil until they wither. Thank you again for all your help.

That’s good news. Those spikes werent visible in the first pictures so I thought there were none. As it turns yours do indeed flower much earlier than here.
