Too late to transplant in Wisc?

I've just moved to a new home, 10 miles from previous home, and would like to transplant some of my hostas this weekend. I can take the hostas at anytime. Temps are high 40s during the day and mid to low 30s at night. Prediction is 32 and 30 for nighttime temp upcoming Tues and Wed. I know hostas can survive a lot...and I'm a risk taker with them, but wondering if I should just wait until spring to move them at this point. I think I'm just itching to dig since i haven't gardened in the last 3 months!! Any thoughts?

Unless it is really fancy hostas and you are not dividing but just digging mature clumps it will work. Mulch heavily with leaves after.

Thank you for the advice! I do have some multiples of a few I want to move so, in reality I do have a backup for the spring if they don't make it. I'll save those that I only have one of for spring transplant. Thank you again for your advice and helping me think it through.

It is not too late to transplant this. Success will depend on the methods and care used and whether this is a root-bound container plant. If already in-ground, get as large a root ball as possible, even if it means sliding it onto a tarp and dragging it around.

Idon't see why not. Just be sure to water well before and after and try to get as much root as possible. I'm transplanting Cornus Mass that starting to leaf out and they seem to have handle it well. Go for it, but don't delay too much more. P.S. I don't know what it is from that picture.

Dig up as much as you can. Make sure the new hole is ready for it. Make sure the new home has good soil. Water and if you can, cover with a lawn chair or anything that will shade it from the direct sun until it starts to put on new growth.

i have a few more minutes now ... if you dig it up .... you will interfere with water movement in the plant ... if its already budded out.. those buds might wilt ... depending on how impacted ... wilt during the sunny day .. recover at night.. etc .... if you could shade it a bit.. during the heat of the day ... it might help during the transitional phase .. until its roots can pump the requisite water ... its a bit different between planting a potted plant with little or no root damage .. compared to digging it up.. and cutting off roots.. or doing serious root surgery on a potted plant ... if its needs to be done.. just do it .... if it can wait until fall or winter.. just wait ... i just cant give exact opinion based on your zone ... at 24 inches wide.. and its not flexible... it might be hard to dig a smaller root ball .. and a 24 inch root ball is going to be heavy ... good luck ken

Scratch that itch! I put a small Blue Angel in the ground the day before the predicted low was 28F and told it deal with it. Came up beautifully the next spring. It’s six feet wide now.

just do it.. and get out of the new owners hair ...

move them all to a nursery bed ..... as small an area as you can ... just jam them in there.. and add some mulch .... especially if heave is an issue with small plants ....

its usually helpful to know where a poster is... to be more precise with specific winter advice ...

in my ground freeze MI ... i could do it until the ground freezes .. though i wouldnt want to be doing such.. if only for how cold my hands would probably get ...

just do it.. and be done with it ...

you can move them next year.. as your new garden develops ...

dont overthink hosta .... they are plants.. not babies ...

ps: use plastic grocery bags to move them .. unless they are huge ... and if they are.. only take pieces .. who needs all that exercise.. unless you have some teenagers to do the work.. lol ... and keep in mind.. you are moving a root mass... if there are any leaves left.. who cares ....
