Best bang buck sink- Kraus next best option?
Comments (21)Hi! After much research here and elsewhere, we went for Kraus sinks in our kitchen (main sink and prep sink.) I had debated Silgranite (and know everyone on this board seems to prefer them) but I felt like stainless a nod to tradition with our 1917 colonial (not a farm sink kind of house!) And, with the placement in the kitchen, it complemented the stainless appliances - kind of a visual balance if you will. Anyway, I'm really pleased with them! The stainless (16 gauge - lower is better) was a better gauge than the Kohler equivalents (18 gauge.) It has a solid surface wrapping it under the sink for sure - it is heavy! And I loved that the grates came with it for no extra cost. (We didn't have those before so I'm getting use to the usage of it, but it certainly helps with protecting the stainless and keeping it clean.) A fantastic bang for the buck, I felt. I probably spent that difference somewhere else, but it certainly helped the budget. I love when I made smart decisions like that (with the help of the GW folks!) Here's a few pics - Good luck! P.S. The amazing folks on GW Kitchens convinced to go with the largest prep sink I could get in the cabinet (21") and I am SOOOOOO grateful. I absolutely love our prep sink. It has a disposal in it and is right across from the stovetop. Love. Here you can see placement of sinks in the kitchen:...See MoreWhich sink better for my dirty family - stainless or silgranit?
Comments (11)Dominos - you have omitted a crucial piece of information for this decision which is what is the color of Silgranit you are considering? I have a Silgranit sink in anthracite (black). It is easy care and shows nothing, and can take abuse from my family. BUT, because I think it's the easiest sink I've ever had, I recommended it to my friend. She heard my enthusiasm, and bought one for her kitchen, but she bought it in the white color. She finds it very hard to keep looking clean. She showed me how easily it stains from coffee and wine, and also how difficult it is to keep looking clean and get those stains out. I feel terribly guilty. I had no idea the white color would behave so differently from the anthracite. After seeing first-hand my friend demonstrate the easy staining and the difficult cleaning of the white color, I cannot recommend it. I would absolutely though buy another in anthracite without hesitation, and the other Silgranit dark colors are likely just as good. Stainless steel also has its advantages, as mentioned in posts above. You must be OK with patina, it bothers some people and not others. I do think gauge is important in a stainless steel sink, and I would only get a 16-gauge, not an 18 or 20 (higher number means thinner gauge). People on this Forum love the Kraus 16-gauge sinks; I've never seen a bad review of them. I think you need to see both kinds of sinks in a store before deciding which material is best for you....See MoreMixing Kohler Whitehaven farmhouse main sink w/Blanco Silgranit prep?
Comments (10)I don’ have the Whitehaven but I do have the Kohler Riverby in white for my main sink and a Blanco Silgranit II in white for my island prep sink. Both are undermount and far enough from each other that I don’t the different materials and finishes make any difference aesthetically. I like them both and haven’t any problems with either. But the Silgranit has a matte finish and is not a pure, bright white - it has little gray specks in it. So be aware of that. Also, Blanco will send you a small sample of the material and Kohler might as well. Good luck!...See MoreHas anyone used Kraus Sinks?
Comments (13)An offset drain is an advantage, and even moreso if it is offset to the corner the way Badgergal's photo shows. I believe a 16 gauge is an advantage over an 18 gauge, though people disagree with me. I am sensitive to the more tinny sound that an 18 gauge sink will have when a fork drops into it. That is me, others feel differently. I don't have a Kraus sink, but as you have seen yourself, it gets very good reviews, and has been for years on this forum....See Moreelisep5
