Sink - stainless or Silgranit
Comments (20)Another vote for Silgranit. We have the anthracite, and when we were looking we definitely preferred the anthracite and cafe brown over the lighter colors. The sink is a breeze to clean and shows nothing, not even red wine or spaghetti sauce. Speaking of spaghetti, we dump boiling water in the Silgranit sink all the time. Silgranit is heat proof to 500 degrees. We've had the sink a year and a half and it looks like the day it was installed. I think people have been mentioning the sink's drain flange. If you are installing a disposal you use the disposal's flange. One important advice is to check the sink before installation for cracks. The sink will not crack after installation. Any reports of cracking have been in transit, typically from poor packing from poor sellers. Check the sink with a flashlight before installation. After installation you won't have any problems. We bought ours from Homeandstone as recommended on this forum, and were very pleased with their service and packing. BTW, we have the Super Single - just love it never going back to a double bowl. Also we are happy not to have stainless' scratches and water marks....See MoreDo you like silgranite sinks instead of stainless?
Comments (27)Yes, Silgranit can chip. I doubt it would from a heavy cast iron pot or pan though. My chips came from dropping a heavy 8" chefs knife point straight down from about 10" up. The other chips came from dropping the sharp edged Kohler drain basket a couple times (arthritic hands). Something very sharp edged has to hit the sink very hard for that to happen, and even then you only get a tiny minuscule chip that no one else even notices. After that I bought the sink grid. No more problems. I might add, that either of these "drops" would have created chips or dents in a stainless or ceramic sink too. Over all, I cannot think of a better, easy to care for sink. It always looks good....See MoreSink Decision (stainless or Silgranit)
Comments (40)Hello, I'm not trying to stir things up here, but this idea "I like my sink to look clean and pretty" (from inkycrab) is something I can't relate to. Of course I would like mine to look pretty: like the pictures posted above, but with 2 young toddlers, is that even a possibility? Like right now, I can't even see the bottom of the sink. (sink grid is another thing I don't understand.) This goes to my reasoning for getting a Stainless steel sink, I don't understand how/why I would need to keep my sink shiny and water-marks-free. I'm getting a SS sink because I can solder it to my stainless steel countertop, so I can hose everything (including my crazy/messy kids) down. So if I can learn to empty out my sink at night, after I do the dishes, clean it, wipe it down. Who would see it at night? Then what happens the next morning: breakfast bowls, coffe cups, sippy cups, etc. Then snack time, lunch, snack, dinner. So the only time the sink is clean is at night when everyone is asleep? I'm also learning about how to use 2 sinks: main and prep sinks. Thanks for enlightening me. Amanda...See MoreWhich Silgranit sink?
Comments (6)Marcia, the sink linked in your OP above is the BlancoDiamond Super Single, which has the right corner drain. I'll link your second choice below, the BlancoPrecis Super Single with a rear drain. I have the BlancoDiamond and prefer it because of its right drain position. The drain is really out of the way, and you can set large pans in the sink to soak without covering the drain. I cannot emphasize enough how much I love this drain position. The fact that one of the sinks can be surface-mounted should not figure into your decision. It won't matter for your installation. Also, a minor difference betwwen the two is that the BlancoDiamond requires a 35" sink cabinet base, and the BlancoPrecis requires a 36" sink cabinet base. If your sink cabinet is 36" you will fit either one.
