Whatever you put there it will have to be narrow. Do you need a place for keys and such? You could put up a shelf. Otherwise, leave it. It looks fine to me.

Going by the last photo, I agree with houssaon ... nothing. It’s not a very wide walkway through there, I’d leave it open. Have some space coming around the corner from the hallway.

I think it would be cool to have a planter box the size of the indent. Meaning it’ll become a flush “wall” with some greenery.
But this is just “extra. “ And I agree with the above that it doesn’t need much.
Maybe if you did wall molding/ wainscoting or even a wallpaper in the hallway I’d continue it here too.

If you are a bit creative, you could hunt a antique corbel and mount as a shelf/table. Or buy a pair like this or any style you want and put a piece of marble across to act as shelf. (Think marble threshold for shower step). Just get creative about it.

I’d ignore it. Why draw attention to the wall that has the AC control and light switches?

Some examples of corbels as shelf/table. By placing something interesting there you draw the eye away from utility items or as I call it “wall acne”. I have thought about making a video training electricians on positioning switches and outlets. Of course, have to get to code people too!

yeah, anything deeper than about 4-6" is going to crowd the walkway. it's too low for a rail for pictures, so I agree that unless you need a place for keys or to drop incoming mail, I'd just fill the mystery holes and move on. after you've lived there 8 years, you'll happen across the Most Awesome Little Sculpture to stand in there. :)

I think it is too narrow and shallow to bother with. Consider it a utilitarian spot to control the temp and lights. Fill the holes though.

I like Flo's ideas of a small shelf - keys and phone charging perhaps?

Maybe do a thin console or cabinet? hang things around the switches. (why do they insist on putting those smack dab in the middle of a wall??)

Or, just stick a tall potted plant there and call it a day.

From your photos it appears that you have furniture across from that area, which means you need the whole space as a walkway. Leave it clear. Even putting a thin shelf there would just draw attention to the thermostat and switches.

I would bite the bullet and move the light switch and thermostat to the side ( the wall adjacent) and put a beautiful framed mirror or framed art that you love in the space. It will be expensive but you won't regret it, ( I had a similar spot 10 years ago and literally got into an argument with my contractor about moving it... no regrets.

Sadly, they do it mainly because it is quick and easy. Also, stacks of 2 x 4 create challenges. But at electrical walk downs in new builds I have given electricians quite a time with locations of these things and cold air returns too. Big problem.

I really like Maureen’s distractions if you need or want a wall for displaying beloved things in frames, not all of which need to be family photos or kids’ artwork (although I am a huge fan of the latter). Things that are very fixed tight to the wall seem better to me than anything on a narrow shelf that could get knocked over
