question about ceiling fans
Comments (4)I checked the amp rating on the 4 speed switch and I'm certain that the sum of the load from 3 fans is more than it's rated for so I had to turn off it's breaker. I'm going to Home Depot to see if the amp draw is written on the box since I already burned mine. I'd be willing to bet that Graybar or CED should have a high wattage dimmer. I'd bet a 500 watt would do it but I'm going to see if they have a 1000. I remember one on a pool with 3 lights that was so big it wouldn't fit in a normal 2x4 box and my electrician had to put in a 4x4 box. If he wasn't in Colorado enjoying a 5 day weekend skiing I'd already have an answer. How come I have to take my cell phone on vacations but my sub's don't??? My problem is that I'm as dangerous as an unloaded pistol because I have just enough knowledge to be dangerous but not enough to know anything, LOL!!! Thank you guys for your insight, I never even looked at the rating on the 4 speed switches provided with the fans. All I did was snatch the old fans down, add a box, and wire in the new switch. It could have been ugly if I turned on the fans and left them running for hours unattended. See ya, Kelly...See MoreChanging ceiling fans- can someone please shed some light on this
Comments (8)What you need is a book called wiring simplified from the big box store to familiarize yourself about what I am talking about. With no grounding do not connect the green wire to anything. just roll it up and wrap a piece of tape around it. You only connect the black wire to black and the blue wire to black not the green wire. The white wire to the white wire. Is there insulation on the brown wire? Now to find out if your wiring is grounded. Check your outlets. Are they all grounded outlets or are some 2 prong outlets? If you find 2 prong outlets then your house is not grounded. If you have all grounded outlets pick up an outlet tester at the big box store. They plug into the outlet and have 3 lights on them to tell you if the outlet is wired correctly and has a ground. Plug that into an outlet and you will know for sure if your outlets are grounded. Grounded outlets have a half round hole. for the ground pin....See MoreCan you paint the hardware on a ceiling fan?
Comments (12)gardenwebber, DS removed the wooden blades from the blade hardware. Then the blade hardware from the motor. Next she removed the bottom plate from the motor housing--that's where the visible openings to the motor were. She spray painted each piece along with the motor housing side and outer edges only of the top, the ceiling cover(?), the extension pipe, and the tops of all screws. The only thing taped was the center of the top of motor housing. There were some openings there, and that part would not be visible. She did this when we were renovating our parents' home. I looked at all the parts spread out in the garage and mentally calculated how much it would cost us to replace that fan. I was sure she would never get it back together again! But she did. And it looked spectacular! --- So good that we wound up spray painting every one in the house. They all looked new!...See MoreNeed help wiring ceiling fan and can lights
Comments (6)The 14-3 my guess is runs from fixture box to switch. The 14-2 my guess is runs from fixture box to can lights. Does your fan have a light? If this is a new fixture, there should be instructions as to what color wire controls what. More important for what controls the fan and what controls the light. So you wire your fan switch to the red on the 14-3, then wirenut the red wire to the wire that powers the fan (typically black) if there is a light. If no light with the fan then wirenut the red wire to the black wire on the fan. For the light switch, if the fan has a light so you would wire the switch to the black on the 14-3, then wirenut the 14-3 black, the fan light power wire (typically blue) and the outgoing black on the 14-2 going to the can lights. If the fan has no light then just wirenut the 14-3 black to the 14-2 black. For the whites, wirenut them all together. Same with greens. This is all assuming your incoming power originates at the switch. If it originates at the fixture box that is a whole different ballgame. More info https://www.do-it-yourself-help.com/wiring_diagram_ceilingfan.html Another note: You cant use a light dimmer on a fan. It will cause the motor to make horrid noises and potentially burn out if left on low a long time while making said horrible noise. Use a fan dimmer, they are in the fan accessory section at the hardware store not the light switch section. Fan dimmers have preset selections, Lo, Med, and Hi. That is what you would look for....See Morearkansas girl
