Thermostat Wires

Just wondering why my thermostat wires would not be connected the terminal tha maches their color. as you can see on the picture, the
Black wire is connected to W
White wire connected to R
Red wire is capped/taped off
would this mean that my black wire is actually my heating control and the white wire is the 24v?
would the red wire be the control wire then?
any insight here?

Maybe whoever installed your stat was color blind. Or maybe they didn't care. Whatever, all that really matters is that the wire connections at the furnace match the connections on the stat. Granted, to have put the colored wires to the 'correct' screw can help troubleshooting later on.

when installing the new thermostat, should I put the white wire to W, red wire to R and black wire to C?

or as it currently is? Black to W, White to R, and Red to C?

What the hell! Whoever did that should be smacked upside the head! There's just no excuse for that kind of work. I would give a guy 1 chance if I saw him do something like that - he would fix it and never pull that again - or he'd be off the crew. And how does this get past any supervisor? Let me be clear, this isn't about cost/money. It costs just as much to cut a block that doesn't fit as it does to cut one that does. In fact, as you point out, the callbacks for nail pops, settling, squeaky floors, etc. should make this sort of nonsense very expensive indeed. Talk to your builder and tell them you want it fixed. I don't think you will have much luck, but tell them your going to post it all over the internet along with the builder's name. The only way this stops is if it gets too expensive to allow it to go on.

Are you sure the Honeywell 9000 series are battery powered? I looked at the data sheet and I don't see a battery option. Battery powered WiFi thermostats are not common but they do exist. The THV1000DV is not a WiFi thermostat and does have a battery power option. If a third wire is available, then it should not be difficult to connect it to a common ground at the the zone controller. I see no reason this was not done other than being too lazy to connect a wire.

Technicians don't have licensing (at least not in Texas). Many companies claim this, but anyone with $20 and a clean back ground can submit their application to TDLR and get a "Technician License" if that's what you want to call it. It means nothing. HVAC contractor's license: what I have gives you this: TACLB28416E (requires much more than just money to get it.) That is a 'REAL' license. The other is more or less a registration with the state, that provides a way for the state to keep tabs on those with criminal records, because by and large the HVAC companies never follow thru.

weedmeister - Thanks you so much for the help. Just to follow up on that's going on in case you're interested" I also contacted Ecobee support a few days before I posted here. I was worried I wasn't going to hear back, which is why I posted here. But it just took a while. Now I've been going back and forth with somebody helpful at Ecobee. The Ecobee guy sent back the same wiring you did, except that he said I can't double-wire the transformer into the Rc and C contacts as you suggested. I did try wiring it up both the way you and he suggested (although without the Transformer), and confirmed the Mini Split would not provide power to the Ecobee. He then suggested it might provide power it I re-wired it using the "O" wire, but it still did not. At first he said that to use the transformer for power, it would need to be done through an Isolation Relay https://support.ecobee.com/hc/en-us/articles/227874527-ecobee-thermostat-installation-with-an-isolation-relay But he later updated that to say I can't use that method because then the Ecobee would send power out to the Min-Split. I actually don't think this is a problem - my reading of the Dry Contact manual is that that's why there's a "volt" switch in it - it's to set the Dry Contact to be OK with power coming into the Dry Contact from the thermostat. I'm hoping I'll hear back from him confirming that, and I can buy a relay and wire the transformer into the Ecobee that way for power. If it turns out that I really can't do that, then I do have an option of running new thermostat wire up from the oil furnace that so I can get another, powered "C" wire that way. Thanks again. Oh, and MiniSplit Heat, thanks for trying to help, but I don't understand how your comment answers anything I asked in my post.

here is the furnace side, first section is the thermostat wiring. 1 red, 2 is white. no clue where the black wire by the thermostat is from.

How old is this house? Old houses with boilers used on two thermostat wires which were usually black and white. A furnace may have been installed at some point. There could be a splice somewhere between wires.

The terminal the wire is connected to and not its color determine the function of the wire. The R terminal is 24V AC, the W is for heat. When calling for heat the thermostat connects the W terminal to the R terminal. This causes the furnace to turn on. If you are replacing the thermostat you need to put the wires on the the same terminals as they were previously connected.

At the furnace it looks like the wires are white, red, blue, and green - so it does like like the wire is spliced at some point.

But - bottom line is that you probably connect the white and black to the new thermostat and leave the red disconnected. If the new thermostat needs more conductors then I would replace the wire.

This house was built in the early 1950s, originally oil, but now is a HE gas system.

Whole issue here is my new thermostat needs a "C" wire. Was hoping one of those 3 wires in the wall were that C wire. there are workarounds, but would rahmther not have done that.

i'm assuming when the new gas furnace system was installed, they set it up with the green/blue because that was what he had on had or incase needed in future.

i will see if i can find the 4 wire cable and see of i can locate a splice anywhere that feeds to the thermostat.
