Several June’s here, yours are lovely. I agree Steve, growing June in sun and shade is like having two different hosta, what a difference !

Question about June Hosta - mine has some solid color leaves. Is this a reversion as some variegated plants do & should those leaves be cut out or is it just how June performs? My June receives morning sun & up to @ 1 pm. It’s been in ground for @ 5 years. The side of it with all the solid color leaves is the “north” side of plant which receives the least sun coming from the south. This planting bed faces East.

PS - don’t mean to hijack this post but with the great picture of Sydney’s hostas & the several references here to June Hosta specifically thought I’d ask all of you. I’m in zone 8 Vancouver WA

Yes, grab that eye firmly at the base and pull while twisting to pop that reverting eye out. I just did that this morning on a Happy Dayz reverting eye. Unless you want to save it which involves slicing and dicing and dirt.

I also have 2 Junes, one which gets the morning sun and the other in deeper shade. Two different looking plants. All of you do realize that some of us are just hopeless, right? We really can't stop ourselves from buying hostas, even if we already own them. lol

@steve duggins(Z6a) - Central Ohio - really?! wouldn’t mind saving it as I like the blue tone & since it has thicker leaves isn’t as bothered by slugs. You’re saying I can dig around the base of these leaves with a knife & pull this part out to replant?

Depends on how much your willing to set back the mother plant. I have a nice digging knife (Hori, Hori) that I would use to cut the desired eye away from the mother getting as many roots as I could and disturbing the mother as little as possible. Depending on where in the clump the sporting eye is, you could dig up the whole plant and wash away the dirt to perform a more precise surgery and replant them both. No need to do it right away either. It might be better to let the sport establish more roots before you separate it. Next spring you should be able to find the sporting part early so the plants have a long time to reestablish. But don't wait too long or the solid blue will take over. But that's years away.

@steve duggins(Z6a) - Central Ohio Thanks Steve, for the detailed explanation. I like the idea of wait & watch for right now! Thinking though that I could do this surgery in late fall just before all hostas here turn to mush & while I can still ID the part needing to be cut out. Doing it in late fall would give both mother & sport the winter to recover. I‘ve often thought I should treat myself to a Hori,Hori & this plant is a good reason to do that!

I'd probably do it a little earlier than that to let the Hosta spread some roots before they go dormant, but I'm still learning too.

BTW, Those solid blue leaves are reverting to Halcyon, a great hosta in its own right. If you want to split the blue leaves out, so you have a Halcyon,

dig the June up

bare root the plant

then you can see where the blue leaves are, pull them gently out

tape the blue leaves gently together so when you plant it in the ground it will be supported.

Tape your June gently together as well for the same support reason.

Now you two plants from one!

You might want to wait until the end of summer as your June will take time to adjust. But do it with enough time for both plants to re-establish.

OR YOU MAY NOT WANT TO GO THROUGH ALL THIS AT ALL AND JUST DO WHAT STEVE SAID.

@steve duggins(Z6a) - Central Ohio & @djacob Z6a SE WI thanks very much to both of you for this info! I think I’ll do a hybrid of both your suggestions. I can’t bear to dig up my flower bed right now while it’s filling in so beautifully and my hardy fuchsias in same bed are leafing out. I’ll decide whether to dig up or simply cut out the halcyon (thanks for that ID) based on how big the June is at end of summer. I was just peeking under the leaves & I see there are TWO separate sports on the same side of plant, one right at outside edge & the other right behind it. Maybe pretty easy to get just that dug out. Thank you both! And, @sydney, thank you for posting your beautiful Hosta pics and making me realize I might need to do something with my June! It didn’t dawn on me until I saw yours.

PUC comes from a solid green hosta named Pineapple Poll, which is sieboldiana x Lancifolia cross. PP is listed as 'small, medium, large', but don't be fooled--mine is over 24 inches tall and has spread out to a good 6 feet in diameter. PP is named after a character from Gilbert & Sullivan.

Sydney: very nice young City Lights. It does grow well, and I've seen one that was 36 inches tall and 6 feet across, absolutely stunning. At maturity, it's rather upright, so not as likely to choke out the neighboring hostas, but you might have to move anything that's too close.

@oursteelers 8B PNW - I do spring (and sometimes fall) ammonia drench. It’s cut down on slugs considerably. I have almost no slug damage now. Rabbits on the other hand... I can’t spray animal repellent quick enough to keep up with those furry pests. 😫
