Rhome410: Good points all. The resource room is sort of an informal study/office. We both acknowledged the need for such an area, but didn't want to waste the sq footage on a full size study. Similarly, we didn't want to waste the space on a formal dining room, and opted for 1 larger than average dining area. The single car garage could easily be renamed shop area. That's my hobby, woodworking. The DW is into cropping, and will have an area for that in the bonus room upstairs. Yes there are cabinets next to the RF. This is not the dream house, but we do plan on being in it for the next 5 years or so. Chapnc: Thanks for your comments! The island setup is really the point of struggle for us. We see lots of ideas we like, but the dims are not exactly the same, and as you know that makes all the difference. The "L" is one idea we are kicking around. I totally agree on the powder bath, that's a change we're making. The "X" in the master bath is in fact a knee space for a chair. Eventhecatisaboy: Backdoor entry to garage is a great idea. I'd thought about it before, but somehow it had slipped my mind. Thanks for bringing that up. Actually, your input brought about a discussion about the laundry room, and we are now going to make that about 2' wider, and incorporate a wall of cubbies/sitting space, making it more of a mudroom. And possibly put a door there as well. We've kicked around the entry into the master, but the DW doesn't want everyone walking in the front door to be able to see into the room right off the bat. I think it would work either way. Chisue, the front powder came about as a compromise. There was no way to make it fit without losing the cubbies, and the DW really wanted the cubbies. we're still kicking that front powder room around, and it may migrate back to the back hall area. The resource room is a poor man's study. :) Due to the way we live, and work, the closet/bath set up works for us best. You nailed the winding corridor, another design compromise. In the original drafts, we didn't have it. It just got added in this draft. We felt that not having a hallway there *forced* all the traffic to go through the kitchen 100% of the time. The hallway is supposed to provide an option, as unlikely as it is it will get used... :) Thanks everyone, please keep the ideas coming!!

I don't know what shape your existing cabinets are in, but if the boxes are okay, perhaps you could save money (or free up $$ in the budget for other parts of the remodel) by refacing them instead of replacing them. Here's a link to a place where you can get new doors (solid wood or furniture-grade plywood) and drawer boxes (solid wood, dovetailed, with solid or furniture-grade plywood fronts, and Blum soft-close slides) for a ridiculously reasonable price. That's what my mom used for her kitchen, and it came out beautiful. Drawer Depot is in California--southern California, I think--so right near you. They were great to deal with and the stuff was high quality. You have to very carefully measure everything, because you tell them down to the 16th of an inch how big each drawer box, drawer front and door should be. They mail it to you in pieces (except the drawer boxes, which they assemble and finish) and you paint or stain it and put it all together. If they're close enough to you, perhaps you could even save on shipping by picking it up yourself. Oh, and PS, add my vote to the pile of votes for expanding the kitchen into the breakfast nook. Sorry - should have included more info- it was my first attempt. Measurements are as follows A- 7' 6" B- 32" C- 22 1/2 " D- 3' (the window is 30") The 31" doorway goes to a hallway where there is the garage entrance and a laundry room as well as a half bath The windows in the bay are about 35" from the floor and the windows are 47" tall. We have discussed putting shorter windows so they would be the height of the counter tops to be able to extend the peninsula more into the bay. Yes plumbing can be moved- if you are referring to the sink dishwasher Family make up- empty nesters but frequently have the 2 adult children and their significant others for dinner. We will usually eat in the dining room on those occasions but everyone tends to hang in the kitchen. We also have occasional baking that includes the entire family and the original reason for the peninsula for more counter space to roll dough. I hope that helps more- and apologies for not sending it first.

Hi folks, We are in the planning stages of a remodel to our 1925 Tudor, which will include moving a wall in our (current) galley kitchen to open it up and reclaim some space currently occupied by an underutilized hall bathroom. All that to say, we will have a fresh new kitchen space that we want to make sure has the correct lighting (among other things). I wanted to see if I could leverage the experts in this Lighting forum to review the plan I've created. Let me know if I've missed any pertinent details in my plan, and all feedback is encouraged! Thank you in advance. I think the only item worth noting is the bottom right light is a 30 degree light, the same as what I'm using as my counter task lights. The reason I'm using this vs. a 100 degree (like the other accent lights) is to prevent having too much light in this area that's small, just inside the door to the exterior and next to an open coat nook and cabinets. (If you think another 100 degree light is better, I'm all for it - just didn't want it to look too bright.) Ryan
