Concrete patio replacement--remove old concrete or pave over?
Comments (2)I have what I think is the same aggregate for my driveway (1969 home). I am thinking about getting stamped concrete put directly on top of my existing driveway. They use an abrasive cleanser, then pour a thin layer of concrete over the existing, make designs with a trowel or rubber stamp and then stain it. It is a great option, especially if you want to set chairs on the patio and don't like to rock from the uneven flagstone. If you do it yourself, careful with the stain, it is a one shot deal and my wife wishes I would have found that out before I did our front porch. -joe...See MoreHelp with 3" raised concrete square patio cover area? Comments (3)I have attached an ispirational picture i found on google to explain better. You would have three materials: concrete, a tile that matches the concrete, and a tile that appeals to you. In the pic the wood would be your concrete and you can see how they transition to tile and yet it is a cohesive design. The banding is shown in the tiled area, but it could be used on either side....I hope that explains what I was thinking...See MoreStamped concrete overlay on concrete porch/patio
Comments (4)That your existing concrete is in good shape is key. Any crack in it would transfer through to the new material. So long as you create proper finish levels, you should be in good shape. Stamped concrete can look terrific. It's biggest drawback is the color not being integral to the slab, but just surface treatment. This is really no problem unless it is subject to harsh wear, which in this instance is probably not going to be the case. If the surface gets a chip or gouge, you'll see near-white concrete below. In most residential situations, it doesn't get that harsh of treatment....See MoreAdvice on DIY concrete patio patio
Comments (15)Another option is to deck over the concrete, depending on the elevation of the back door. You can set 2X4's or 4X4's (PT) directly on the concrete slab and deck over it. This could easily be a DIY project and cost hundreds instead of thousands to give the patio a new life. I agree that a good pressure washing could be a simple solution as well. Look into concrete stains and paints. All of these solutions increase maintenance, expect pressure washing. Good luck and show us after pictures....See MoreWestCoast Hopeful
