That your existing concrete is in good shape is key. Any crack in it would transfer through to the new material. So long as you create proper finish levels, you should be in good shape. Stamped concrete can look terrific. It's biggest drawback is the color not being integral to the slab, but just surface treatment. This is really no problem unless it is subject to harsh wear, which in this instance is probably not going to be the case. If the surface gets a chip or gouge, you'll see near-white concrete below. In most residential situations, it doesn't get that harsh of treatment.

Thanks! Yes, the contractor went over it carefully, and the only cracks are in the control joints. They would honor those joints in the overlay as well, so shouldn't be an issue.

The only harsh wear I can think of is that our dog runs in and out a lot through those areas... Hopefully it's durable enough that his paws won't wear a track into the overlay? That would seem pretty delicate if that's the case.

Yes, that's the right thing to do with old basic concrete. Depending, you also don't need to "stamp" it to put a design into it, you can just "color" it with a light pseudo faux technique.

Having your concrete stained and stamped will look great! It's simple yet looks great and will last a lifetime.
