Help with Master Bedroom ceiling "feature"

I will be painting the bedroom soon. I'm planning on painting the walls SW Sea Salt, but I am open to other ideas. There are a couple of places I would love suggestions for. First, there is the "feature" over the bed. My thought is to paint it white like the rest of the ceiling so it disappears. Any other ideas for it? My other issue is what to do for a window treatment? I will replace the sheer with something similar. I need to hide the ugly panel on top and still be able to open the French door. I'm thinking maybe something that looks like a cornice board? I need to replace the nightstand on the right side of the bed. Other than that the furniture is staying, but everything else can be changed.

What is it? Is it a soffit -- i.e., boxed out -- or just a board suspended in space? If the former, I'd paint it to match the walls, not the ceiling. If the latter, I'd pull it off. Looks like it was hiding the hardware for the blinds, but now there's another set of curtain hardware attached on top, so ...?

It's covering the exterior security shutter. It can’t be removed. The panel is to access the electrical for them.

I would be tempted to paint the closet doors and built-ins the same color as the wall so that they blend in and provide less contrast in your small room. If you did that, it wouldn't be necessary to change the casings. Let the bed be the star. You can add pillows and throws with color and texture to add interest and draw your eye to the bed and away from the size of the room. Don't forget to paint the inside edge of the door to your bathroom to finish off that entrance.

When we build, there won't be any rooms above our Master Bedroom. At the moment, my almost 13-year-old son and 3-year-old's room is over our Master Bedroom. My 8- and 10-year old's room is above the living room. Their bathroom is between their two rooms. When sleeping in, I can hear every single movement that my 13-year-old and 3-year do. There was carpet in the room which helps with the noise, but I hate carpet and put in wood flooring. If he drops something, I hear it. When he goes to the bathroom, I hear it. When all 4 of them are in one room, I can hear them. Just as this, I can hear every movement in my other boys' room when in the living room. They are very rambunctious and like to jump around. Another problem I have is that the pipe from their toilet/tub goes down the wall which is located between our living and kitchen/dining room. When they flush the toilet or let out their bath water, the pipe rattles in that wall. I know every time they use the bathroom and so do my guests. Most times it is rather embarrassing.

I'd keep sepia [?] going, and not add black, the darker option, cause to me it competes with it, and sorta squashes its softness. That's not what I want to paint to match the ceiling. The big green box on the ceiling is.

That’s an interesting feature....if it were the 70’s it would be mirrored....could you mount curtain rods to the outside edge for a faux four poster? Yes, please, paint it white!

Paint the one above the bed to match the ceiling. Can you remove the "cornice" over the sliders?

No removing bump out over the French door. The bump-out over the French door is for the built-in shutters. They are like hurricane shutters and that is where they roll up. (I’m in Illinois so no chance of hurricanes.) The bump out is fine.

definitely paint the ceiling "feature" same color as ceiling

as far as the window treatments, do you close the sheers or do you need something that closes? I would take the curtain rod down if not using and just paint that bump out whatever color you choose

now if you want something for privacy etc I would remove sheers and use curtain rod with some pretty curtains you can close

Steph - You will grow to love your "rolling shutter" as it provides total security when fully closed. I had them on all my windows when living in Phoenix AZ. Suggest you visit a showroom to learn about some features which are too lengthy to describe here.

Steph - Yes, paint ceiling white. For the box above window, you could add a cornice. Keep it clean lined and maybe add an accent color as detail, adding curtains in color or patterned fabric and sheers.
