Comments (47)Far, far, far better than recycling plastic bags is not accepting them in the first place. I bet I haven't accepted 5 plastic bags in the last 6 or 7 years, but I never run out of them, because they are constantly imposed on me. People bring me things in plastic bags. I mention this because people always justify their acceptance of plastic bags on the grounds that they reuse them. I believe that no one need ever fear not having a plastic bag to line their trash cans with. For instance, yesterday a neighbor brought me a bunch of egg crates in a plastic bag. The day before, a neighbor brought me a Lo Mein dinner, to thank me for some eggs, in a plastic bag. Someone recently returned a tupperware container to me in a plastic bag, which I thought was a tad redundant. My garbage can bags come from the OPBL that I collect each fall. I try not to be too judgemental, but it's all I can do when I see a clerk put a plastic quart of milk with a handle on it into a plastic bag (with a handle on it). I make an effort regarding plastic bags because the sight of them along the road when I'm driving, or the sight of them in the water when I'm kayaking, upsets me. So, when I and a bunch of former Garden Webbers were in a state park in Frederick, Maryland two years ago and had gone on a liquor/food run, I, typically, declined bags for my purchases. My dear, dear friend of eight years, whom I had just met the night before, Hayseedman, was behind me in line with a deck of cards he was buying. I heard him say, "Could you double bag those, please?" I whipped my head around to find the damn fool grinning at me....See MoreFirst home -- furniture advice
Comments (20)I've attached an older thread that people discussed (at long length) the advantages of spending 'big' money on furniture. It offers a lot of different perspectives on the topic. Its a joke in my husband's family that they always buy the more expensive piece in the store. And, when they get it home, it is the most uncomfortable thing they've ever sat/laid on. They spend good good money on furniture. I think sometimes you'll just never know. I've also had this issue come up lately since we just closed on a house and need to (partially) fill it with furniture. I'm going the 'get what you want, but buy less over a long period of time' route. I love antiques, and the house really is small. So, every piece counts 'cause there isn't much room for many pieces! I've pretty much decided to spend almost 5,000 on a dining table and a secretary desk. My father is an antique dealer, and in all my life, I have never seen two pieces like these. They are just so unique. On the other hand, many pieces of furniture won't be purchased/updated for a long time. The IKEA coffee table and TV are staying. I'm not getting rugs. We are using our old dining chairs that will look positively awful with the new table. I'm making a upholstered headboard (which I've done once before) for the bed. My mother wants me to pay $100 for a table - but she always has hated most of her furniture. Why would I want to if we have the financial means? Anyways. End rant. Let us know how it goes! Oh, and to whoever suggested the estate sale website. THANK YOU. Now I have someplace to browse piles of people's old stuff!! Comments (83)I bought the cute PB Reindeer mugs last year for Christmas. We ended up not using them until this year. They were tucked away in my kitchen cabinet in their box until we brought them out this Christmas. I rinsed them out and used Two, one for hot chocolate and one for tea. The person with the tea suddenly had the hot liquid coming out at the base. At first she thought she had spilled it and grabbed a cloth. While this was happening the other person was pouring the hot water into the Chocolate mix in his cup, there was a cracking popping sound and the hot chocolatey liquid spewed out from a very large crack running vertically down the side. In the meantime the hot tea cup was continuously seeping from around the base of the cup but we couldn't see a crack anywhere. After cleaning up the mess and making sure no one suffered any burns, we cleaned out the cups and checked them out. One had an obvious crack that had occurred, while the other one used for tea had no discernibly visible crack. BUT we discovered that when you ran a wet finger around the bottom of the sides of the inside base of the cup , you could feel a hairline crack running almost completely around the inside base circumference. These cups come in a package of 4 and are expensive considering 2 out of 4 cracked when used for hot drinks. We are afraid to use the other two cups for fear of getting burnt. l wanted to read reviews of these cups but cant find ANY reviews on any of their products. This leads me to thinking they purposely don't have anywhere to post them. From a CS perspective this is a very poor optic, doesn't inspire brand loyalty or any desire to continue to purchase their products. Trust and belief in the brand providing quality products is seriously compromised. I also purchased a woven duvet cover that I have to needle in a couple of loose ends that were left sticking out the ”GoodSide” of the cover. Shoddy finishing work with a no care attitude....See MoreHelp with dd's room
Comments (32)I'm a bit stymied. Dh asked dd what kind of bed she wants (sigh). She really wants a platform bed because it would be lower to the ground. She did fall out of bed while asleep a month or so ago and I'm sure that was startling/scary. Depsite the concerns about metal headboards not being as comfortable, that's what seems to work best in terms of not wanting white and wanting something that is flexible for future updates. So that would be my preference. And I'd rather not have a footboard for ease of making (and potential sleeping comfort in case taller people end up sleeping in the bed). This combination doesn't seem to exist. I have found metal platform beds, but they come with footboards. I can find metal headboards, but I can't tell from the descriptions whether they work with platform beds? Any thoughts? thanks!...See MoreSEA SEA
