Need suggestions to update fireplace wall area
Comments (8)I will see what can be done with molding to improve the bookshelves. I'm not sure how difficult it will be to remove those stick on mirrors, but will check on that also. I didn't realize there might be stick on wallpaper to just cover them up. The walls will be painted a warm off white color, not yet selected, and I'm wondering if the bookcases/mantle should be painted the same color as the walls to blend in, or white for a contrast. What about the fireplace brick color? Right now, with the exception of the white bricks, everything else, including ceiling, is painted the same color Glidden Antique White. I'm looking for a slightly deeper off white color this time though. I'm finding some of my samples, of various brands, have appeared too yellow on the walls so far....See MoreUpdates needed to home... open to ideas
Comments (14)It appears you are changing locales as well. By the vegetation in the pix, the new home looks to be in a desert region, and I would guess the old home is not. That means you'll be dealing with a change of natural light, and those windows may let in a lot of it (I note the shade screens) so you may find it to be brighter than where you now live. Your present dining set looks to be Queen Anne style, which may not fit in well with the more contemporary lines I see in the new home. Try to see this as an opportunity to branch out from your norm, stylewise. The FP wall definitely needs a makeover. Is there TV behind the doors? Perhaps TV could go in that office recess where they have the big china hutch and convert that space to a media room. A curved sofa against that sweeping pony wall would be striking. You may do yourself a favor by touring some homes for sale in the area. You can do that online. If this is desert SW or Nevada, for example, you want to stay in keeping with local expectations when you change the interior architecture, especially if you will be selling a few years on. See how others have treated the FP area. As for me, I would close the cubbies and do a new type of stone for the FP itself. In the office area, you can wallpaper the backs of the cabinets to work with the wall color you select. Since the kitchen cabs will remain maple for now, leave the office cabs to coordinate, but make them smile with something interesting in the backs. Consider the color of your flooring grout as a jumping off place for wall color. You could go with that and add a tinge of green to it for an interesting gray/green wall color. That can cool down the day time temps for you too if this is a hot climate. Green is emotionally soothing as well, and with enough gray in it, you should be able to see it as a neutral backdrop for upholstery, rugs and drapes. Definitely exchange the valances for fabric to soften the harshness of the squares that dominate the windows and the openings to the kitchen and breakfast area....See MoreHow can I add storage to this fireplace wall?

Comments (4)I could post 100 pictures of what to do w/that wall. All depends on what you want to spend, if you want to keep the brick, remove the hearth, add windows, or shelving. since it faces north, you could bring in a few windows, or one on one side. put the tv on the large wall. have you looked at any inspriation pictures to give us an idea? light / coastal doesn't tell us a whole lot. you could remove that one wall, open it up, cover your beams (beam) with wood veneer (or strip the white) and bring in doors, or you could do taller windows to get this look: The brick is already there. just paint it white and add a wood beam mantle. replace fan w/a nice chandelier. if you do this, you could put tv on the FP. doors too much? here's a shot w/windows. this could work. shiplap around the brick, black stone around the box, windows, bench seating w/cabinets, reclaimed wood beams. just a diff design element. I would do these deep cabinets. you could do smaller windows w/floating shelves and a simple base cabinet underneath them. I like the idea of doing the fireplace w/something like this, windows, benches. love the dark blue too No windows. you could apply this millwork board and batten type of molding around the upper part of the brick. paint the lower brick. reclaimed wood mantle. for the side walls, built in bench, sconces. similar here w/this one. but no brick. The wood beams are beautiful w/your type of ceiling. you want builtins on the sides? do something like this. board and batten wood treatment on the upper portion, marble slab surround the firebox. start looking at fireplace wall design w/coastal decor. Or, vaulted planked ceiling with brick fireplace. you need to narrow things down a bit....See MoreBec K
