This is probably better in the Home Decorating Forum, but I will throw in my $.02. I have a room with cream furniture too and my target color is going to be Harvest Time or Honeymoon, both of which are goldish-beige. Harvest Time: Honeymoon: (I think the Harvest Time thumbnail is not accurate. Looks too peachy in that link. It is not really peachy at all. I've used it before in a hallway) The only other neutral category is more beige, less gold. I recently did a bathroom in BM Kangaroo, which went great with the cream vanity. These of course are just starting points.. zillions of shades lighter and darker to choose from. Here's a lighter beige that would contrast with cream furniture. Almond bisque: The gold-beige colors would work well with pastels green and blue, but probably not pinks. The beiges would work well with red. To be more non-commital to future choices of other elements in the room, I would lean towards lighter shades. The lighter the color, the more versatile usually. I personally prefer mid-tone colors for more impact. But if you can, it is best to have the overall color scheme settled before painting. Reds vs. pastels are very different visions.

First of all, do you want to keep the wood tone on the walls OR go with a light color such as light blue or even white? Nothing brightens up a room and brings in the outdoors as these two colors do. If you go with white paint on the walls, I would suggest you paint the ceiling a neutral light blue to bring in the color of the lake and the sky. Then, you might add a bedspread in a royal blue and white window pane plaid with large white squares inside the royal blue grids and complete the look with sheets and pillow cases in the light blue of the ceiling and royal blue or navy blankets. Red or yellow in small accessories would make a refreshing accent for the room. A textured area rug in dark brown or dark gray might make a nice backdrop for the blue and white linens.

I like the last 3 - though still not what I'd do. Too much going on in them, and we tend to have too much clutter to add business to the walls. I wish I could keep things cleaner but we're fairly useless. Hopefully with these movements we'll be able to shed some crap. But I've been pretty bold lately... pained one room white (mascarpone) and teal... and we have a living room painted in mascarpone and cayenne, and the dining room is mascarpone and Adriatic (if I'm remembering properly - it's a deep blue). I think if we do something interesting with the closet doors (with color) then I'll leave the small wall white - but otherwise, I may paint. I'll leave the glass bricks open - that's the only "natural" light that comes into the bathroom.

I dont like the idea of a wall to wall shelf or any other shelf over a bed. I have visions of something coming down and landing on the occupant or occupants of that bed. I do like the color and sconces etc, in the post above by Laura. It looks great. I also would want draperies on the window. The rods should be moved out a bit, so it looks wider and put the draperies on and pull to the sides, so the window itself is open. Paint one wall white and then view it for a day or two in all lights and see just how it works in your room.
