Is my couch is too big for a coffee table?
Thanks to some normal delays and then pandemic supply chain issues, the custom sectional I ordered for our family room in late 2019(!!) just arrived. In the interim, my grandma downsized and gave me her blue velvet sofa, which I’d like to use in the space, too.
I have a few dilemmas:
-I have one more armless chair section of the sofa (which had its own shipping delay, but should be here next week). I originally planned to put it under the front window, so the sectional would be an asymmetrical U. Obviously that doesn’t work now, because my grandma’s sofa is there. Should I make the long arm of the sectional one chair longer? Currently, the sofa ends about where the second bank of windows begins. The other chair would push it to the middle of the second set of windows. Should I use the chair somewhere else in the room? I can always put it somewhere else in the house.
-What kind/shape of coffee table should I use? the space is so big, I’m overwhelmed. I have a standard rectangular shaped one that is sentimental and looks nice, but it’s WAY too small. It fits well in front of the blue sofa. Do I need more than one? Each section of the sofa is about 44”.
-What should I do with the rest of the room? Currently, I have an upright piano and a bookcase across from the long part of the sectional, but I’m hunting for a good deal on a baby grand. The bigger piano would fit well behind the sofa, near the bar. I also have a harp, a 5 piece guitar stand (about the size of a 4’ wide bookcase), and several smaller instruments to accommodate. I currently have one big armchair that I’d like to keep in the room, and would get more, if it would help things feel cozy.
-Obviously need some art on the walls. I’m working on that....

Thank you! It’s a fun room. The blue sofa is here to stay — I actually have my GREAT grandma’s sofa in our more formal living room, and the only other spot would be the basement (hard no).
Here’s how the room is now (au naturale, on a messy Wednesday afternoon!) — our old round table, and one that my sister hand painted. I like the finishes, and the white one fits well with the blue sofa. But as is, it all looks thrown together.
Do you think I need a giant rectangular piece?

Comments (21)I was actually going to ask if you had a very small coffee table or no table before, because I wondered if it was just the "differentness" that you were responding to. I think it looks totally fine. I think your sofa and chair (is that the only seating in the room?) need to be scooted closer together and that may help the room. Currently, it doesn't look like a conversational grouping because the sofa and chair are so far from each other...unless that's an optical illusion from the angle of the photo. I'd mix up the pillows on the sofa, too. Three matching pillows is a little...you know...ho hum. How about covering the middle pillow in a non-matching fabric? I'd also hang something larger over the mantel. The clock seems a little lost there. Maybe a colorful piece of artwork...then add some color elsewhere in the room. Everything seems fairly monochromatic that I can see. Looks like a dark red throw on the back of the sofa -- maybe you can use a few more touches of that red in the room? Finally, just another random thought, but it looks like the chair might need an end table?...See MoreIs my coffee table too big?
Comments (6)I don’t think it’s too big. We have a large coffee table too. We spend a lot of time in our living room and the big coffee table holds our magazines, I pad, laptop, drinks and remotes. I feel a living room is to be lived in❣️ Before people come over we do some streamlining of all the stuff. Comments (9)Yep next project is to address that to the best I can. Partner wants a big tv but they are an eyesore in general but I need to compromise on it :). I plan to get rid of the stand and paint the builts in white so will hopefully minimize the overall look. Would love to redo the whole wall, change out to the fireplace for a lower and wider electic fireplace and mount the tv directly above but that sounds expensive.
