Replacing panes of glass without removing sash
Comments (13)Just pull the sashes; you need to do that anyway to put in the primary sash weatherstripping since you're planning on installing airtight storms. I don't know if you have pulleys (which complicate the process). You only have to take off one side of the interior jamb trim and a parting bead. Be patient and you can get the trim off with very little risk of breakage. Parting beads are a bit trickier because they smaller, but in some ways they are intended as sacrificial elements. I get about 75% out intact. You can see where someone prior to 1880 removed my original sashes and substituted the current two over twos. There are a few broken, but reinstalled, parting beads and little discrete prying marks on every window. Glazing on the flat, or on a slated easel, is so much easier than trying to do it in situ. You'd be able to get the compound out and replaced with a proper back bedding very easily. HTH, L....See MoreSoftlite Window Review by DIY Installer
Comments (6)Since my post on New Year's Day a few noteworthy things have happened: I received an apology for Soft-Lite representatives not making it down before the holidays and a request to come this week (today actually). The Regional Sales Manager and the Director of Technical Services drove about 4 hours this morning to review my concerns along with Mr. Hillebrand of Morris Energy Solutions. I was very impressed with their response. They were able to correct all the problems while here except for the bowed spacer sash which will be replaced and packaged differently for shipment. Their explanations for the root causes were honest and I believe they are correct. The three windows with the black “caulk” were corrected by removing the glazing bead and pulling out the offending black “blob”. The screen with the broken spring action was disassembled and reassembled to allow proper action. I have had a few hours since they left to reflect on their commitment to ensure the satisfaction of their customers. They informed me that the production team had seen and discussed the photos I had sent a few weeks ago. From the CEO down, all have shown a true pride in their windows and correcting the noted issues. In summary, they have actually done a remarkable thing...turned a bit of a critic into a fan. I learned that a lot of the frustrations I ran into would have been corrected by the installers during installation. Since the homeowner (yours truly) installed them, I found them and did not necessarily know how to correct all of them. Given the magnitude of their response to correct the issues today, I have to update my grading of both Soft-Lite and Morris Energy Solutions to “A”. I am not only satisfied but appreciative of their efforts and feel I can now recommend both Soft-Lite and Morris Energy Solutions. ---A Happy Soft-Lite & Morris Energy Solution Customer in Cincinnati OH...See Morecostum cabinets in Pittsburgh
Comments (10)Kitchendreaming, if you live within a reasonable driving distance from them in Ohio, the Mullet Cabinet folks will drive out and do measurements, drive the cabinets to you and install, etc. At the very least I know from my friend that they will drive to Pittsburgh, which is like 125 miles from them. Evidently they have non-Amish people to drive them around. If you're really far away from them, it's probably still worth calling them because I have found that Amish people who aren't in your area will refer you to Amish people who are in your area. There's this nationwide network of Amish people... Amish households literally have phonebooks (i.e., address books, plus phone numbers for the ones who have phones) that list every Amish person in America. I vaguely remember hearing about Mullet Cabinet once referring someone to another Amish cabinet maker out west somewhere. They're all very local and so they don't compete much with each other....See MoreSteve Lau or someone else who doesn't use barriers
Comments (19)I tried to do without barriers for many years, but I have reluctantly installed some on about half of my 80 or so bamboo plantings. At first I was able to control my runners pretty well with rhizome pruning, but as they have gotten more mature over the last 12 years at my present location, they have started putting out larger and more aggressive rhizomes that travel farther. I have a large yard that is densely populated with a wide variety of other plants and I have gotten tired of dealing with 20 foot long rhizomes that come up in the middle of my daylilies, my rhododendrons, my maple trees, other clumps of bamboo, on the other side of concrete patios, and under asphalt driveways. It's one thing if you have fairly soft soil and rhizome prune religiously; however, I have clay and glacial till that is hard to dig up and remove rhizomes from. I have fairly large diameter barrier installations, and I have yet to notice any negative effects on the contained bamboo....See MoreLarry K
