Photos of new home but I’d like your best advice! I’ve lived in this home for 35 years. I’m moving 1300 miles? Advice? Especially in regard to hiring movers? Local? National?

Don't know if you still need advise but I've moved many times including cross country and what has worked for me is using the AFB pods. You pack your own belongings and put it in the pod or there are companies now, from my understanding, that you hire and they will do the packing and unpacking for you. Otherwise you will need to find yourself a National firm as they can cross state lines, as local ones stay local. You just need to figure out how much of a full service you want and need and then start dialing away. Advise? Evaluate what you are wanting to move will really have a home in your new home. Many people move with everything and only find that they don't have the space for it or it doesn't really go with the style of their new home. And then they regret that they paid big bucks to move all of it. Good luck and New Hampshire is beautiful. Enjoy your new home.

Get estimates from at least 3 companies. For long distance moves I've always preferred a national name rather than the locals. Be aware that even though 2 companies might both be "Allied" they will be different. Ask if the estimate is binding (what you want) or non-binding. Look at the insurance coverage that's included. Ask if your items will be the only one on the truck or will there be other households on the truck? More households means more stops/starts along the way and could cause a delay on the other end of the move. Also ask if they provide free boxes and other supplies (newsprint) or negotiate for that even if you're packing yourself. Ask about the cancellation policy.

Look at the perks and benefits of your credit cards and any memberships like AAA or AARP for discounts. My college alumni association has a discount for movers.

I moved from Southern CA when I retired a lot of years ago. I grew roses there but my passion was really Camellias for which I had 100 or so even in my small lot there. Well enough of that. I live in Upstate NY Z 5. On 10 acres. My rose growing is done in less than ideal soil mostly because the sunny areas have shallow soil under lain with shale. Also on the clay side. I also agree with grafted on multiflora and Canadian nurseries as American sources such as J&P graft on Dr. Huey which is less than ideal for cold zones although it seemingly is hardy. I wander off. Mostly I want to put in plug for Kordes roses. They are one of the biggest and oldest growers of roses in the world and they are in a cold zone. They have worked for a very long time to hybridize using hardy wild roses. They are not well represented in the US partly because of a prejudice against things German a left over from WW2. Anyway I have found there roses great for me. Brownell's were hybridized for Z6 as their breeders lived in RI, Z6. They have a reputation for being hardy partly from their marketing label - Sub-Zero. Anyway look into Kordes roses. I have found them not only hardy but also beautiful roses and chosen for over-all great performance.

I brought an enormous number of tropicals and orchids with me when I moved from South Florida to Kentucky. Our truck was so packed with my plants that we "abandoned" some pretty nice patio furniture to be able to bring them all. I had to buy HID and lower intensity lighting, a humidity containment chamber (I got a large Hydro-Hut) fans, timers and the whole indoor grow room shebang. Now... five years later I haven't lost anything but I really have to question the money I have put into maintaining plants that I am "merely" sentimentally attached to. If I had it to do over again I would have found them nice homes with my Florida friends because as well as I keep them here it is not a perfect environment. That said- I love that I have the equipment because I have things no one else here has, I can start any seed or grow any plant, overwinter anything, and I have even increased my tropical collection quite a bit. So it depends- are plants something you want to fool with a lot? It does take time and there are things that they must have. If it is a hobby you want to participate in and are willing to spend a few bucks to do so, then good! But if you have other interests and priorities I'd leave them where they are happy and find more suitable plants for your new home after you get there. Maybe browse the Citrus forum here and get a feel for how those plants need to be overwintered- that would help you a great deal. And if you don't have a new house picked out yet it will give you a feel of what to look for. Hint- south facing garages with big windows are very handy... if a conservatory is out of the budget. Will the food be going in the moving van or your car? I could see taking what you have room for in the car. That would mean that you would have something to eat right when you get there. In the moving van, on the other hand . . . . They weigh the van. Every pound will cost you money. What is the cost per pound that the movers are charging you and what is the cost of the food? It might be cheaper to donate the food and buy all new when you arrive. The food might attract bugs, if it's going to be in the van for 4 or 5 days. If you want to ship the food in the van, check with the moving company to see if it's allowed. They might allow canned food, but not a paper sack of flour. I'd donate or toss a 5 lb. sack of flour, but would have second thoughts about a 25 lb. sack. As a veteran of a kazillon moves, I'd only move the minimum amount of food. I'd take canned soups and anything else that is pretty much heat-and-eat, because that will make life simpler the first few days you are in your new home. I'd take the spices in the car, because they are small and also expensive. I'd use up as much flour and sugar as possible, even if just on making cookies and muffins for snacks in the car on the drive to the new place. And I'd offer the remaining flour and sugar to a good friend and donate anything that isn't opened.

I agree about using PODS. Even if you need two of them. We moved cross country 5 years ago, and really got rid of a lot of things. We had a furnished apartment in the new area, and were willing to take our time looking for a new house. I hired a crew to pack the pod, and some movers to help unload it. Far far far better moving experience than I have ever ha before. We stored the pod for 2 -1/2 months before moving into our new house.
