Moving container trees from Southern Nevada to Illinois.

My family and I are planning to move to Illinois from southern Nevada at the end of the school year. We have several container trees such as Meyer Lemon, Lime, Black Mission Fig, Italian Stone Pine, and Nectarina(?) Nectarine. They all do so well here in the desert, and would like to take them with us to Illinois. Does anyone know if they would survive the extremes of the Midwest, or could they be grown indoors? Would it be best to just start over once we get there?

Well, the Lemon and Lime, and probably the Fig, won't survive the winters in Illinois.

Italian Stone Pine *might*... they survive Jersey winters, but Illinois can be harsher depending on where in Illinois you are moving.

Not sure about the Nectarine... gut says it should make it but I'm not as familiar with it off-hand as I'd like to be.

As an aside, I did manage to move a 3 foot Norfolk Island Pine from Pennsylvania to *northern* Nevada in the dead of winter once. However, of course I keep that indoors all the time.

dont know what happened to the aboce message so I am reposting it.... Hi fruit nut was wondering if you could help me I have 40 fruit trees in 15 gal container I want to cut the bottom of the containers and put them three quarter of the way in the ground. One reason is gophers the questions I have is the roots of the tree when I move them to the location I want to put them in the ground when I tilt the container I will cut the roots how will this affect the tree when should I do this should I use BI and soak them I live about one mile from the coast in southern calif near San Diego any help is greatly appreciated Thanks andrew

Well, I am soo sorry to hear about your heater problems Maria. Blowing you LOTS of hot air to warm your house til the heater gets fixed...and the fireplace gets found. I can't imagine how cold it must be-yikes. Keep the oven working-hehehe...it can be your temporary heater. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner!!! I had that same problem at our other house once...playing search and you "might" find garbage cans down the street somewhere (and once a filled oil pan...found safe & sound across the street on our neighbors porch)!! We had a patio table umbrella fly in our backyard once while we lived there. No one ever said they were missing it??? Just how far did it fly from, I wondered. This morning it is not windy anymore. I slept wonderful last night-thank goodness. When the wind blows like that it hits the sunroom windows and is noisy. It is very cold but that's ok...woke up at 7am to 35 degrees AND a almost dead mouse that my cat caught!!! The mouse was discovered yesterday in our great room...he ran all over the room all day and night with the cat and both dogs (and Dan and I at times) following him. I told the cat it was his job to catch him while we were asleep LOL...I woke up and walked out to the great room and there was the (almost dead) mouse and Casey...who was so very proud of his work.:):):) We are going to go behind our fences and find some more tumbleweeds to finish the snowman for our yards. Dan says I won't believe how many are around our fences. I believe him. We have empty lots all around our house so it won't be hard to find a tumbleweed (or dirt). I will post a photo of this cute snowman too, Bill. I will also post a photo of ALL of my tomatoes I picked before the frost hit. You won't believe how many I got. I doubt many gardeners want to deal with winters here to garden...so don't worry about that, Bill. Nobody does it-we just sit and watch what dies and what is still alive LOL...and we wait for springtime. Beca~

Needle palms and Sabals are also great palms to get started with! Yuccas arent palms but they do complement them pretty well and some can survive a zone 5 without difficulty! Dont forget Musa basjoos, Cannas, Elephant ears, Castor beans, Hardy passifloria, hardy hibiscus, and lots of others to give a tropical look that goes great with palm trees! You probably wont be able to keep it looking tropical year round, but you can get palm trees to survive year round with protection and enjoy them the majority of the year! Right now you might find ID'ing palms pretty hard, but as you look at posts on all these boards and google all these palms, you will become very familiar with them soon. I started learning about cold tolerant palms about 5 years ago and planted my first cold hardy palms 2 years ago. I knew a lot about them before that, but never gave them a try. I give them protection even in my zone 7, but hopefully they will be able to go without protection one day. I've always loved the tropics and palm trees and now I cant imagine not having some even this far north. Good luck! -Alex

We always knew you were hot Mohave. The heat wave that you are experiencing is also showing up in Northern California. Last week it was the high 90's and low 100's in Napa Valley where we were installing 26 - 60 to 90 year old Olive trees up a steep driveway. I wonder what kind of transplant success rate we will get with those trees ? We also have a project being built on the water concurrently and it was like paradise. Unfortunately we will be wrapping that project up and moving most of the crew to Napa where we will be building over a thousand sq. feet of rock walls. Last week my partner and I were strategizing how we can make working conditions more comfortable for the crew ( especially after working on the coastal water ) . We have designed a simple shade cloth structure that will be outfitted with a water mister system that will be placed over the area where we will be setting up the stone walls. I just saw a refrigerated cooler at CostCo yesterday and think I will go back and purchase it today and stock it with those gel pack ice packs so the guys can wrap the iced gel packs around their necks while working. In the past when it has gotten hot like this and I was laboring in the field I would wrap ice cubes in my bandanna around my neck. Of course it looked like I had just come from a wet T-shirt contest after about 5 minutes of wear , which was fine about 25 pounds ago, but these days I don't think it would look so good. ... not zesty.

you might want to ask about the conifer.. in the conifer forum ...

and provide the latin name of such.. or a picture for full ID ... to insure which conifer we are dealing with ...

none of the citrus will live thru winter.. nor the fig ... outdoors .. now.. if you get a florida room.. well insulated.. with minor heat ability ... maybe.. maybe ..

I brought an enormous number of tropicals and orchids with me when I moved from South Florida to Kentucky. Our truck was so packed with my plants that we "abandoned" some pretty nice patio furniture to be able to bring them all.
I had to buy HID and lower intensity lighting, a humidity containment chamber (I got a large Hydro-Hut) fans, timers and the whole indoor grow room shebang.

Now... five years later I haven't lost anything but I really have to question the money I have put into maintaining plants that I am "merely" sentimentally attached to. If I had it to do over again I would have found them nice homes with my Florida friends because as well as I keep them here it is not a perfect environment.

That said- I love that I have the equipment because I have things no one else here has, I can start any seed or grow any plant, overwinter anything, and I have even increased my tropical collection quite a bit.

So it depends- are plants something you want to fool with a lot? It does take time and there are things that they must have. If it is a hobby you want to participate in and are willing to spend a few bucks to do so, then good!
But if you have other interests and priorities I'd leave them where they are happy and find more suitable plants for your new home after you get there.

Maybe browse the Citrus forum here and get a feel for how those plants need to be overwintered- that would help you a great deal. And if you don't have a new house picked out yet it will give you a feel of what to look for.
Hint- south facing garages with big windows are very handy... if a conservatory is out of the budget.
