Best Roses for Pot Garden
Comments (10)Out of the 14 different classes of rose that I've grown in pots, one class bloomed better than the others: Polyantha Mlle. Cecille Brunner Perle d'Or' Marie Pavie' Be sure you get the real one, there is a ho-hum imposter that is a boring Florabunda sold under the same name. I've grown them both, the real Marie Pavie is quite fragrant and has smaller flowers and reddish pedicles. 'Little White Pet' 'The Fairy' in a pot, the canes arch beautifully. Good luck with your pot garden. My neighbor grew a dozen or so miniature roses in pots successfully. I didn't care for the brush like growth habit, of most of them. But what ever you like is best. Comments (6)I over winter them in my z4 area by digging a trench in my veg. garden a couple inches wider & deeper than the diameter of the pot they're in, lay them in the trench on their sides & cover them up with the soil I dug out to make the trench. Have very good results using this method. NOTE...I use plastic pots & they can stay in the pot over winter but if you use clay or ceramic pots, take them out of the pots because these materials can't take freezing....See MoreBest fertilizer for potted/container roses?
Comments (4)I second Osmocote Plus. It’s so easy to use and the Plus part means that it has the trace nutrients too! I can’t do any kind of fish fertilizer, since the smell makes me gag. But I found a fertilizer that has high NPK levels since it is a synthetic fertilizer but mixed with seaweed extracts for all the needed trace minerals. It’s called Sea Grow by Grow More....See MoreBest roses for pots
Comments (15)Thanks for all these suggestions. Kristine I saw Munstead and Darcy at a nursery near here. Great to know they do well, I will try to go find them again. Sharon, I'm in 10b on the west coast near the water. Doesn't get very hot here in the summer, or cold in winter. 50F-80F range. I'll look up Travita and Quietness. I have Lady of Shalott in a big pot and like her so far. I wanted to try Sharifa too but can't find her anymore. How do you like her fragrance? Oursteelers, I have Young Lycidas in my cart. I liked the coloring..is he violet to you or more magenta? I'll look up Sophie's Perpetual and Katharina Zeimet too thanks. Sylvia, thanks for your suggestions. Love Song and Rockwell look beautiful. Will have to find where I can get them. I'd like to have some that stay small in different areas, so Rockwell sounds great. Susan, would love to see pictures if you find them but no worries if you don't :) Thanks for the tip with Eden. I will have to try and find an older one. I saw some big ones in ten gallon pots at a nursery here and should have grabbed one but I kept thinking it didn't repeat....See MoreMischievous Magpie (CO 5b)
