Thanks for the info Beth. I always know I can count on your knowledge! We are selling our house and purchased an inexpensive off the shelf sink so I don't think we will get involved in the fixes you mentioned above. But they are still helpful to know about in case we run into the same issue with our new home.

I thought that there are some 4 inch faucets that don't require that plate. Maybe that would work? ( not that faucet that you love, but maybe there is another one out there that could work)

I don't see why you couldn't use an 8" spread on 4" centers.

Obviously I don't know the lingo. I am actually looking to replace a vanity top and faucet and I too don't care for the deck plate so this is helpful. So far I have a choice of 8 inch or 4 inch holes, but this is still helpful.

I’ve been looking at a lot of 8” widespread faucets over the past few days - trying to select new ones for a couple bathroom renovations.

The answer to your Q is - yes, you typically can install a widespread faucet into holes set up for a 4” spread - HOWEVER, you shouldn’t IMHO. In photos where people have done so, it just simply looks odd. The widespread faucets cost more than the 4” ones, and you won’t wind up with the look you are trying to achieve - save your money. I also don’t like the look of 4” faucets like the one in your photo - everything still looks “cramimed” together.

Someone actually gave a widespread faucet a negative review because ”all three parts were too wide“ - but still installed the faucet. The reviewer actually started chipping away at his/her countertop - until the holes were wide enough so the parts would fit! As you can probably imagine, it looked TERRIBLE! Personally, if I was limited to a 4” spread, I would try to find a single lever faucet (with a plate) that looked nice.

Just to follow up - I had not know that single hole faucets come with a deck that can be used on a 4" center that will cover up the other two holes. A nice guy at my local hardware store taught me this. They have an extensive selection of faucets and he told me that nearly everyone who comes in for faucets wants a single hole. That's what I went with and while it isn't my personal preference, it looks contemporary and that is what I was going for.

@Stax - I just read your comment above. I don’t understand why you appear to be irritated with me. I didn’t imply that anything in your post was wrong - actually, I didn’t refer to your post at all. All I was simply trying to do was explain that even though Kendrah might be able to install a widespread faucet in a 4” spread, my opinion was that it wouldn’t achieve the look she wanted. I thought that providing photos, along with the explanation, would be the best way for her to ”see” the answer to her question. Plus, I wanted to make a suggestion that would work for her.

I don't know how long ago the orginal post was - but it is now 2024 and I was also looking for all of this information. I do not like the look of the 4" faucets either with the deck plate- I bought a widespread 8" hoping my plumber could "force it" to work but no luck. I may try the single hole faucet with deck plate as well. I will search "mini-widespread" as well as someone suggested.
