Ceiling hole for pendant can't be centered

There's a beam in the ceiling which prevented the electrician from making a hole (for a pendant light to be hooked up to) where I needed him to...so he put it in one or two inches off center. It wouldn't be a big deal but it sits just in between two windows above the sink and there's a tall gooseneck wall faucet centered in between the windows also. So being off a little is noticeable.

He said he can't do anything about it and suggested I find a pendant light that has a big enough canopy to fudge a little.

Is it impossible to cut into the beam? All the canopies big enough are the size that would go w/ a chandelier - not a kitchen pendant!

This probably isn't the look you want but can you swag the cord over? Maybe even move the hole in the ceiling farther away so the swag would look better. Good luck!

I had to use a pancake box for this purpose. It is a shallow electrical box about the depth of the drywall.

Katie - That could be a real possibility too. Looks like the height would work too. Thanks for the link and website. Redroze - I saw the two you posted on TOCL website today and really like both. I am planning on contacting them tomorrow. Here is my question, do you think this light from Rejuvenation is close enough to the top picture in your last post? The one from Rejuvenation is a little cheaper and I've seen it in person in satin nickel, but I'm not as crazy about the extra "balls" and "bulbs" on the rods. The one from TOCL seems simpler to me and might be worth the extra couple of hundred of dollars. Or would no one notice the difference? I swear I'm not normally this picky and usually can find lots of things I like, but for some reason now I feel like this stupid light has to be just perfect since I've already returned one. I should just had my electrician do two electrical boxes, but now the one is centered in the ceiling and he would have to cut two new holes and patch the old one. Checked out Hubbardton Forge, nice stuff, not exactly the right sizes or colors. But a very nice line. While at Lamps Plus I did see the Kichler Montara Collection 24 1/2" Wide Pendant light with umber glass. It's a bit old world and might have to be shortened but the price was certainly right! I've also seen ONLINE this porcelain fixture, but I hate to buy something like this sight unseen! I have about 114" from the beam to the floor and a pendant will spread the light better as well as look better mounted on the beam. That leaves about 7 ft from the floor and this will/should sit over the large square glass/wood coffee table. Here is a link that might be useful: Fixture choice

One centered hole then when you look for lighting just keep that in mind and no to a linear one for sure. Your island is an odd proportion am I seeing right that you have 2 cooktops or ranges the walkway on the side of the seating needs to be at least 60” do you have that?

Bottom of pendants should be above head knocking height, generally 30-36" above countertop. Just leave extra wire so you can lower then if needed. Most hang fixtures too high.

Cleo's got it-- use a shallow electrical box, and if your electrician has to notch the beam very slightly to make it fit, that should be okay.

lisadlu, someone in my local store suggested that and I think it's a decent option, however I'd still prefer a centered hole if I can get away with it. But thank you - if this pancake box suggestion doesn't PAN out (heh heh), I may go that route.

You dont want to 'cut the beam' unless you want the upstairs to become the downstairs.

Knotching is ok. I had a similar situation with a ceiling fan in a bedroom. I attached a 'pancake' (thin box) directly to the beam. Not a problem.
