Siding advice for southeastern CT home

Hello - We have a 1450 sf 1929 cedar shingled 2-story several blocks from the beach. The painted shingles on three of four sides will need to be replaced as they are starting to curl and crack from exposure/age. (There is also water damage from a leaky gutter too). We have a separate garage with the siding in better shape. Our neighborhood has mostly older homes with natural siding in either shingle/shake or plank form, mostly painted.

Our dilemma is 2-fold:

1. The first is current construction costs. Do any pro’s out there see a value in waiting another year or so to see if prices drop?

2. The bigger issue is whether to replace with cedar shingles and have them painted vs replacing the house siding with Cedar Impressions with a color to match the garage as close as possible. Will there be a significant cost difference between the 2 choices? We are well aware of the pluses and minuses of each. I’ve been reading older postings from 7-8 years ago and there was a significant amount of vinyl haters out there. We will both be retired as of next year and future maintenance costs will always be a concern.

Thanks for any feedback!
